FGI Connects with Major Architecural Project

Float Glass Industries (FGI) has supplied most of the interior processed glass for Connect House, a multi-million pound development project in Manchester. Artisan Holdings has recently completed conversion of the disused Daily Express offices and printworks into a combination of luxury apartments and high-tech office space.

The redevelopment of the site, which consists of two buildings connected by a pedestrian bridge, began in December 2001 and was undertaken in two phases.

'FGI was selected by Retro Future, Artisan’s construction division, as the main supplier of glass for both phases' explains FGI director Roy Offland (pictured left).

'It represented a contract valued in excess of £100,000 and the extensive use of glass in key design elements, such as balustrades, has enhanced the sense of space and light throughout the prestigious development', Roy adds.

Retro Future specified processed and toughened glass from FGI for a variety of different applications within Connect House, from spectacular balustrading and partitioning to contemporary shower screens. In addition, 10mm polished edge toughened glass has provided an attractive solution for features such as staircase panels, curtain walling, lift shafts and glazed viewing areas. FGI’s experienced team was also able to advise on technical aspects of the glass specification to ensure relevant building regulations and standards relating to safety and thermal efficiency were met.

Connect House now offers 25,000 sq ft of well-appointed office accommodation on two floors, while the adjoining building has been extended to four storeys and fully refurbished to create 46 luxury apartments and seven penthouses. Zack Clarkson of Retro Future comments, 'We’ve been more than happy with FGI’s service. They supplied the quality and quantity of glass we required for this impressive development and always delivered complete and on time. In fact, we’re already talking to them about another contract and look forward to continuing our good working relationship.'

Float Glass Industries, based in Manchester, operates one of the best-equipped independent glass distribution, toughening and processing facilities in the UK. The 109-year old company has recently opened a third toughening line using the latest Tamglass ProConvectionTM tempering system. The investment will enable FGI to keep pace with demand and enable the production of large-sized architectural toughened glass as well as high volume, high quality hard and soft coat Low-E glass.
