Glaverbel's
Thermoplus Energy® Enhances The Baltic Centre
The
Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art with six levels of open space, restaurants,
bookshops, art workshops, rehearsal rooms, film studios and auditoria
is a stunning re-use of a building known to generations of Tynesiders
the Baltic Flour Mills.
The designers of this project created large panels of glass supported
by slender bespoke aluminium sections and glass fins. The glass chosen
was Glaverbels Thermoplus
Energy®. This super-insulating double-glazed sealed unit combines
heat insulation in winter with effective solar control in summer
giving interior comfort all year round. One sheet of the sealed unit
is a low emissivity glass coated with a thin layer of precious
metal oxide which gives Thermoplus Energy its special thermal
properties. Winter insulation values can be down to a low U-value of
1.11W/m2.K)and solar radiation is reduced substantially by 42% in summer.
But it was the very high light transmission that clinched Thermoplus
Energys® specification. At 70%, combined with a neutral/bluish
tinge appearance, the glazed areas offer optimum daylight and viewing
clarity.
The result is a light airy building eminently suitable for artists,
exhibitors and visitors alike. Large open spaces show off to advantage
the frequently imposing pieces of contemporary art with much natural
light available. The viewing areas for visitors are glazed from floor
to ceiling to maximise the stunning vistas along the Tyne and the acclaimed
new blinking eye bridge adjacent.
