PollardsFyrespan Joins the Café Set

Central to the capital's newest open space, located within Cadogan Estates' redevelopment of the former Duke of York Barracks, is a stylish pavement café manufactured and installed by PollardsFyrespan.

The entrance and fire resistant glazing specialist undertook the project on behalf of management contractor Laing O'Rourke, providing a turn key package, including the fitting out of the service areas.

While Elizabeth Banks Associates was the landscape architect responsible for the space as a whole, the open aspect, glazed eatery was designed by Paul Davis & Partners.

Project Architect lan Law comments: 'This is the first new public square to be created in London's West End for more than a century and the café is a key feature to the open space.' Having decided on the concept of a 'glassy pavilion' the complete contract for the structure and its fitting out was let to PollardsFyrespan, who provided detail design development and site management.

While the 28 mm double glazed units were silicone glazed to maximise visibility between inside and out, the exposed framing elements are of oak and shot-peened stainless steel with inconspicuous support rods; creating a slender and elegant structure.

As well as the ability to handle complex bespoke architectural metalwork and glazing projects , PollardsFyrespan also has acknowledged expertise in entrance design. This project involved a pair of bespoke oak framed doors of considerable size, designed and fabricated to slide back so that, in fine weather, the café area can be extended to include external seating.

The copper roof was built up in the traditional manner using pre-patinated copper with standing seams, all formed in-situ and laid on mineral wool insulation over a plywood decking. The ceiling to the internal space and the majority of the external soffit areas were executed in Armourcoat, a polished plaster with excellent moisture resisting characteristics.

This prominent café, to be operated as a Patisserie Valerie outlet, underlines PollardsFyrespan's broad capabilities as an experienced contractor able to undertake complex projects involving on-site and off-site construction techniques.

PollardsFyrespan is part of the Anglo-Scandinavian HansenGroup with annual sales of £100 million and over 1,000 employees.
