Brought
to Life with Glass
Liverpool
Museum has had a Tuff-X glazed walkbridge
and balconies installed in its dramatic six-storey atrium completed
as part of a major two-year refurbishment project, said to be the largest
cultural investment ever made on Merseyside.
The glazed bridge traverses the atrium that lies at the heart of the
museum, giving access to magnificent new galleries and creating a powerful
first impression for visitors entering the building through the new
street level entrance.
This
dazzling space was created using 12mm clear toughened glass supplied
by Tuff-X, the Liverpool based glass processor. Toughened to BS 6206
impact safety standards, the glass was also heat soak tested prior to
delivery in order to ensure against nickel sulphide inclusions that
might affect the integrity of the glass. The bridge glass was also screen
printed with an etch effect.
Tuff-X also supplied stairwell balustrading in 12mm clear toughened
glass finished with polished edges and similarly screen printed.
Described as an encyclopaedia brought to life Liverpool
Museum is the largest of the National Museums Liverpool venues with
fascinating and varied collections that include archaeology, ethnology
and the natural and physical sciences. Special attractions include the
award-winning Natural History Centre and the Planetarium.
Tuff-X, the glass processing division of the James Price Group, operates
from 40,000 sq ft premises near Liverpools Aintree racecourse.
The companys close proximity to the M6/M62 motorway complex means
a fast and reliable service for both the North and South of England,
as well as easy access to the industrial heartlands north of Manchester
and the East Midlands. In addition to glass processing, Tuff-X with
its state of the art equipment, is also a UK producer of insulating
glass sealed units for both commercial as well as domestic applications.
