In Whom Do We Trust?
Well, I'm not talking about currencies, even though the Dollar and the Euro have both been in the news lately. I refer to the DTI's latest reincarnation of the ill-fated Quality Mark Scheme, now being punted as The Trustmark Scheme. It is rather significant that all the hype surrounding the launch of the new scheme somehow manages completely to ignore the failure of the QM.

However, it doesn't sound that different to me: 'The scheme will 'go live' in the autumn when consumers will be able to use TrustMark to help them source a reputable firm for a wide range of work'. Just like the Quality Mark then, which attempted to harness the power of the World Wide Web to a public verification process which had the lofty aim of stamping out Cowboy Tradesman, but in effect gave the trade very little help in trying to build a meaningful database of reputable tradespeople.

Synseal Global 600

One notable error on the DTI's part was ignoring some of the commercial enterprises - such as Homepro/Fair Trades, or Barry Dunlop's eBuilder network - which were already operating in our market (and several others) and had established both credibility to the trade and had also overcome the technology curve to make things work on the web.

It does seem very odd for the DTI to launch the service to the trade, only for visitors to be told on arriving at the TrustMark site that the Search function (ie, the core of the whole operation) is 'Coming Soon!'
. That all sounds a bit too much like the Quality Mark scheme, where the DTI thought all it had to do was provide the barest of skeletons and trust the trade to add the flesh (oh, and pay for it as well...). Although not wishing to damn it before it is up and running, trust this new service at your peril!
