On a more positive note, interim results from Deceuninck Group suggest that the UK is only down by between 5-10%, which is a lot better than the 25-30% some analysts have been talking about in recent weeks. More positive still, Deceuninck reckons that polymer prices have stabilised (well, until the next price rise, they helpfully add!) which may lead to a summer of content and help bring a bit of confidence back into the home improvement sector. The rise in polymer prices - some 10% in the UK over the past year and a whopping 25% in the USA - has not done Solvay any harm, as it announces a 39% increase in profits in its plastics sector in its interim results.

conditions in most European Building Products markets remain challenging: 'Energy-related costs are still rising, though the energy surcharge introduced in Europe in November of last year has provided some relief. Significant improvements in manufacturing performance have reduced costs further and as a result our performance is in line with last year', he said.
