Downturn or Consolidation?
A couple of news stories this week make specific reference to what is not quite accepted as a market downturn but which looks more like the period of consolidation which industry pundits have been predicting for years. Retail spending is still depressed, the latest bad news is B&Q closing down a number of outlets, but big ticket items which add value to a house tend to be less affected than luxuries, so the conservatory and replacement window market may still have some life in them.

One barometer of market confidence are exhibitions: and we report below that advanced sales for Glassex 2006 are ahead of last year, in terms of signed contracts, which is encouraging. The Earls Court show later this week, 100% Detail (which co-locates with 100% Design) also looks to be in rude health. At the same time, the organiser of GP&T has announced a change of dates for the 2007 edition, putting it back from May to November, which will probably pitch it against Vitrum. The thinking, presumably, is that the market can accomodate Northern and Southern European glass exhibitions taking place at around the same time.
