Mixed Reports Suggest Flatter Market
Mixed news from various sources throughout Europe and the USA paint a confusing picture. First Quarter results from PPG suggest that the international glass business is strong but not as strong as it should be because it is being strangled by high costs, while Tessenderlo's Q1 suggests that the PVC-U window industry is still showing more growth than many sectors, but is not exactly a booming market.

As if to reinforce this, CertainTeed, part of the Saint Gobain Group, has just invested millions in a window line offering the American homeowner a second generation PVC-U product offering energy efficiency and high performance.

Closer to home, the composite door market continues to thrive, with Sentinel just picking up one of its biggest ever public sector contracts and in the new build sector, despite signs that the housing market has finally peaked, there is good news for Premier in securing a long term deal with a major housebuilder.

PPG Reports on First Quarter
PPG Industries reported on April 17th first quarter net income of $78 million, or 46 cents a share, which includes aftertax charges of $6 million, or 3 cents a share, for the cumulative effect of a required change in the accounting for asset retirement obligations, and $3 million, or 2 cents a share, to reflect the net increase in the current value of the company's obligation under the previously reported asbestos settlement agreement. Sales for the quarter were $2.1 billion.

Tessenderlo Group 1st Quarter 2003 Results
The turnover of Tessenderlo Group, parent company of Eurocell and Vredestein for the first quarter of 2003 amounted to 493.9 million EUR, i.e. practically at the same level as that of the first quarter of 2002, which had amounted to 485.0 million EUR.
