Mixed Reports Suggest Flatter Market
Mixed news from various sources throughout Europe and the USA paint a confusing picture. First Quarter results from PPG suggest that the international glass business is strong but not as strong as it should be because it is being strangled by high costs, while Tessenderlo's Q1 suggests that the PVC-U window industry is still showing more growth than many sectors, but is not exactly a booming market.

NBW Ltd, a manufacturer and installer of the Duraflex Diamond Suitehas recently expanded its operation with a move to a new purpose-built factory, twice the size of its previous premises.


Health & Safety
Results of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) designer initiative held during March 2003 in Scotland and the North of England revealed that many designers are unaware of their duties under Regulation 13 of the Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 1994 (CDM)

Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) visited construction sites across the City of London at the end of April to check on the use of ladders and safety harnesses

On 10th May, Mark Warren, who is not generally known for his athleticism, has bravely agreed to take the plunge over the side of one of Hanley's tallest buildings (along with three of his staff) and abseil down to the ground to help raise money for the Royal National Institute for the Blind.

PPG Reports on First Quarter
PPG Industries reported on April 17th first quarter net income of $78 million, or 46 cents a share, which includes aftertax charges of $6 million, or 3 cents a share, for the cumulative effect of a required change in the accounting for asset retirement obligations, and $3 million, or 2 cents a share, to reflect the net increase in the current value of the company's obligation under the previously reported asbestos settlement agreement. Sales for the quarter were $2.1 billion.

Tessenderlo Group 1st Quarter 2003 Results
The turnover of Tessenderlo Group, parent company of Eurocell and Vredestein for the first quarter of 2003 amounted to 493.9 million EUR, i.e. practically at the same level as that of the first quarter of 2002, which had amounted to 485.0 million EUR.
