Private sector growth is forecast to fall sharply over the next three years according to the Construction Products Association's latest Construction Industry Forecasts, with output in 2003 forecast to grow by just 1.9%, dropping to 1% in 2004, with a slight rise in 2005 to 1.1%.

The World's Gone a bit Topsy Turvy
Maybe it's the prospect of having an English cricket team actually capable of beating someone, or maybe it's the looming Holiday Season: whatever it is, there are strange things going on. How about this for starters - Masco is selling some of its companies after a buying streak which has lasted several years. This shouldn't feel strange - after all, it's what conglomerates do, but it still feels a bit odd.

Wellingborough, Northants based trade fabricator Glazerite Windows has just
announced the tripling of its production capacity in three years with the support of its PVCu profile supplier Veka plc

Recent investments in production and administrative systems have now established Status fabricator Colorzone PVCu Ltd as a key supplier of coloured PVCu window and door products for commercial, local authority and social housing contracts

Shropshire fabricator Platinum Conservatories, Windows and Doors have experienced a business boom, coinciding with their move to Spectus Sightline 70 profile

When he took over his father's Lancashire based fabrication company Town and Country, Mike Pearson was faced with the choice of which profile to use for windows and conservatories. From the short list of four, he quickly narrowed it down.

'Business has never been better', according to Premier Profiles' fabricator, St Neots Windows and Conservatories, which has just doubled its manufacturing plant at Eaton Socon with a new 2,500 sq. ft. unit, and opened a brand new conservatory showroom.

Health & Safety
John Lennox, the transport expert for BSI, announced in his speech on Corporate Killing at the Society of Operational Engineers annual conference last week that more must be done in terms of ensuring occupational health and safety (H&S) whilst driving vehicles

Work was stopped at almost a quarter of the construction sites visited by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors during the national blitz on falls from height during the first two weeks of June.

Photovoltaics
Product developers, building owners and designers are taking a new look at high-performance glass facades as key in creating buildings with improved access to daylight, better indoor air quality and improved energy efficiency. But a facade that helps improve a building's interior environment and limits its loss of energy is not enough, say some sources. A building's skin should be a power generator rather than an energy liability.

Within the next few months, the roof of San Francisco's Moscone Convention Centre will be covered with 65,000 sq ft of photovoltaic panels.

Veka Advert
Or what about this: at the same time as three major housebuilders announce satisfactory, stable and profitable conditions in the UK housing market, one of the biggest UK construction companies can't wait to get out of it. No-one seems to be able to make up their minds about this one. Except the window industry, that is, and we have a few more examples this week of major players cosying up to the new build market.
Deceuninck Advert

Tony Higgin You can't help feeling that most companies can't quite believe that they are still in the black, and that business is at least adequate. Of course, it's not that cushy for everyone, and this week's list of Financial Notices from the Insolvency Courts makes sobering reading.

Anyway, keep the faith, not everyone's going bust and England may even win the Test Series.

Oh, one more example of unusual goings-on: the normally genteel Alan Burgess has gone on the warpath (read his email!).

Just one more thing - in this week's Gl@zine there are no fewer than 64, yes, sixty four, new articles. I think that may be some kind of record, but I'll have to get back to you on that.
