The Upside to Currency Fluctuations
Currency exchange rates still appear to dominate world markets, and I suppose they always have, but it seems that multinational companies are flagging it up more in their financial reports than they ever did before. There is always an upside of course - it's a good time to take a holiday in the USA, and it's an even better time to sell UK style conservatories in the USA, as we hear from Trade Plas and Aluspan this week.

The aluminium market is usually good for a bit of controversy. One of my personal favourites was Bjork's mum lying in front of an earth mover about to dig the foundations for Alcoa's new smelting plant in Iceland towards the end of last year. Now we have the rather ugly public spat between Alcan and Pechiney: the former - having just released rather lacklustre second quarter results - has announced an unsolicited public offer for the latter, who has responded by employing five of the heaviest financial institutions in the world to defend them. Should be a good fight.

Now, it appears that David Kent, Masco Board member and Avocet director (and former owner) has left the company. It is reported that his replacement at Avocet is Ted Gould, a Masco big hitter from its Kitchens and Bathrooms Division. We hope to provide more details on this in due course.
