New Edition of Specifier's Guide to Steel Windows

Underlining the continued relevance of steel windows to today's construction market both in the new build and refurbishment sectors - The Steel Window Association has recently published a new edition of its Specifier's Guide.

It emphasises the material's capacity to comply with the latest amendments to the Building Regulations, as well as steel's many other widely accepted attributes.

Amongst the established benefits of steel window frames are the combination of strength and slenderness, allowing large openings to be spanned while maintaining the maximum percentage of glazing, framed by elegantly slim sections. Then the double protection of hot dip galvanizing and polyester powder coating not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of steel framed fenestration systems, but also ensure their performance endures throughout a long low maintenance life.

After asserting these key benefits, the 12 page guide presents descriptions of W20 and W40 profiles as well as Standard Metal Windows and cold-formed Hollow Profile systems. A specimen specification and typical section drawings are provided for each one.

The SWA guide concludes by reviewing the Performance Characteristics for W20, W40, SMW and Hollow Profile Systems, including their weathertightness, security and fire safety. Together the different types of steel window present the construction specifier with an array of articulate, practical and economically competitive design solutions.

Hallmark Breaks the Mould with new GRP Architectural Literature

With consumers ever more hungry for new home improvement ideas - and installers constantly looking for new ways to meet the demand - door panel manufacturer Hallmark Panels has launched new literature to illustrate the range of Architectural Moulding products which claims to keep both sides of the equation happy.

Manufactured from glass reinforced plastic (GRP), Hallmark Architedural Mouldings offer a choice of traditionally designed products that not only enhance the visual appearance of any property but are also easy to install and thermally efficient. Designed to provide a truly competitive alternative to traditional building products, the range also requires minimal maintenance - occasional cleaning with warm soapy water is all that is needed to ensure the products keep their looks.

A choice of architectural pillars and door surrounds complements Hallmark's existing range of residential doors. Developed to replicate traditional wooden patterns, the Victorian and Georgian-style surrounds are available in dark and light brown finishes as well as three different shades of white.

Building Products from Panels Plus

A new Building Products brochure is available from DP Plastics/Panels Plus showing its range of maintenance free GRP fibre glass products, from overdoor canopies, porch roofs, Grecian columns, garden room roofs, to bow canopies and bases, and UPVC window arch coach tops.
With eight standard sizes to choose from the MKI & MKII overdoor canopies, both feature a fluted fascia, and can be linked to Romanesque Pillars or Gallows Brackets. Low Voltage eyeball downlights can also be incorporated if required. The MKIII is a decorative high gloss overdoor canopy that can be fitted in minutes. Although this is self supporting it can be supplied with Romanesque pillars.

The MK IV is a tiled effect roof with high gloss ceiling and gable end. This canopy is self-supporting but can also be used with highly decorative timber gallows brackets. Any RAL or BS colour can be matched.

The Hanley porch roof is possibly the most versatile product, being available in any size up to a maximum and modular thereafter. It can also be used in conjunction with most of the product range to create more complex roof designs, or on its own with attractive fascia to create one off designs.

For use with the Hanley porch roof are round and half round Grecian columns (see picture). A circular ply pad can be supplied which will direct fix upward into the canopy and act as a spigot to receive the top of the column. The strength of the columns can be greatly enhanced by filling them with sand or some other non-crushable materials.

All the garden room roofs feature a flat or vaulted ceiling option and are available in three whites and brown as standard. Panels Plus can match any RAL colour. Roofs can be manufactured to fit under soffits, and cut-out’s around soil pipes or other obstructions can be provided if required.

Recessed skylights can be pre-fitted into the roof, enabling the installer to provide the customer with the complete package. As a further option Skylight rebates can be fitted (unglazed).

The bow canopies and bow bases can be produced in any size, in a choice of 3 whites and 2 browns, and any shape in multiple facets can be achieved.

The UPVC window arch coach tops are available in two styles ‘Victorian’ or ‘Tudor’. These easy to fit arch inserts simply replicate a 'cottage' effect. Fitted between the glass unit and glazing bead these attractive inserts will transform any project.

All Panel Plus products offer a 10-year guarantee against water ingress, and with ISO 9002 (formerly B.S.5750) status, quality assurance is guaranteed.
