Reference Source for Doors
The
Second Edition of a 60 page guide has just been published by manufacturer
LS Leaderflush Shapland, covering all aspects of performance doors and
doorsets and providing a single reference source for specifiers, as well
as important RIBA Accredited CPD material. This edition includes the latest
information on new standards for accessibility, as well as proposed changes
to Building Regulations Parts M and E.
This document covers major performance characteristics such as fire, smoke
and acoustics in detail, but also offers guidance on other aspects often
not considered during the specification of doors and doorsets, including
strength, durability and surface characteristics. A section on Design
Considerations includes requirements which should be taken into account
from the earliest design stages of a building such as sizes, door swings,
visibility and operation - particularly to meet the needs of disabled
people as set out in the new BS8300 and draft Part M.
For each subject area, information has been gathered together from various,
sometimes-conflicting sources including Regulations, Standards and guidelines
from specialist organisations. This information is then reviewed and summarised
in an easy to use format, offering specifiers a fast, single source solution.
The Guide is not only an essential reference source for use during design
and specification but also useful RIBA Accredited CPD material to update
specifiers on the impact of the latest standards and regulations on doors
and doorsets.
In addition to an objective reference document, The Guide to Doors and
Doorsets is also the definitive information source on LS Leaderflush Shapland
products and services, supporting specific product range brochures. Full
details of doorsets components are covered, such as materials, door leaves,
frames and vision panels, as well as explanations of specialist areas
including hardwood veneers. Later sections deal with scheduling, specification
and ordering, as well as installation and maintenance. A Glossary is also
included to define and explain specialist terms used within the industry.
The 60 page 'Guide to Doors and Doorsets' is available free of charge

Multi-Purpose Brochure from Natur-al
Natur-Al
Conservatories has produced a new brochure for its conservatory system
illustrating the key features and benefits of the system's construction
concept to both installers and consumers.
The brochure explains how the rigid aluminium structure and wide choice
of finishes, both inside and out, have made the Natur-Al conservatory
an alternative to PVCu. A diagram shows how a continuous connection between
roof and dwarf wall ensures strength, while the separate exterior and
interior build method for quick and easy on site assembly, is also outlined.
Designed as both a trade and retail marketing tool, the multi-purpose
brochure can be over-printed for Natur-Al dealers with their company details
and used to promote the product's features and benefits to customers.
Natur-Al Conservatories also sees it as an effective way of communicating
the technical advantages of its approach to prospective installers.
Since the system was launched just over a year ago, the company has been
actively recruiting experienced retail installers focused on quality and
service to become licensed dealers. To date the company has signed up
eleven companies covering a broad geographic area across England and Northern
Ireland.

Glaverbel
Newsletter
Glaverbel's
latest Newsletter claims that its Sunergy range of glass, has met a market
need as evidenced by rising production quantities and sales.
It was Glaverbel's expertise in solar-control pyrolitic coatings for the
Stopsol range that led to the development of Sunergy, a glass range that
combines solar control with thermal insulation. The company finds that
both products complement each other perfectly.
Sunergy capitalises on a pyrolitic process 'chemical vapour deposition'
developed by Glaverbel's Research & Development Centre. This process
exploits the behaviour of a gas in a high-temperature environment to continuously
apply perfectly uniform layers of metal oxides onto glass, creating a
hard pyrolitic coating.
It is this hard pyrolitic coating that makes Sunergy unique. It can be
laminated, toughened, curved, enamelled and silkscreen printed giving
architects free rein when it comes to bringing their plans to life, making
it popular with glass processors for its ease of storage, maintenance
and transport.
A 10-mm thick glass has recently been added to the Sunergy range.

Overhead
Glazing - A Clear Solution
To
date, using glass for overhead applications has proved problematic for
architects and structural engineers. Now Architectural Glazing Solutions
(AGS) has produced a detailed fact sheet on overhead glazing, looking
at unexplained glass failure and solutions with laminated architectural
glass.
The fact sheet was developed after Solutia identified what appeared to
be a serious lack of guidance on what types of glass should be used overhead.
The overhead glass fact sheet 'Problems of Overhead Glazing - solutions
with laminated architectural glass with Saflex®', is a guide to designing
and building overhead glazing applications. The fact sheet begins by explaining
the different glass types available and their very individual characteristics.
It describes, in detail, their manner of failure, pertinent considering
recent high profile instances of glass failure in overhead installations.
The design, specification and installation of overhead glazing must be
carried out with both routine maintenance and the safety and security
of building and occupants in mind, as well as in accordance with the standards
and regulations governing its use.
The fact sheet details UK regulations, where they should be used and in
what combinations. A list of relevant European standards relating to safety
and the use of glass is also included, alongside a list of useful references
for designers and specifiers
Solutia, manufacturers of the Saflex® polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer
used in laminated glass, have been providing information to the design
and construction sectors since the inception of the Laminated Glass Information
Centre (LGIC) in 1990. The AGS, also sponsored by Solutia, is continuing
this work, providing generic information on laminated glass, as well as
specific Solutia products.

Building
Façades Liability and Damage Limitation
A
free, DTI funded leaflet advising building owners and occupiers on legal
liability and damage limitation in respect of building façades,
has been produced by BRE and industry partners.
Owners and occupiers have a legal responsibility to ensure their buildings
are safe. If injury or damage is caused, for example by part of the façade
falling, then liability arises.
The façade forms the external weatherproof envelope. In modern
buildings it is often attached to the building frame, making no contribution
to structural stability. Many different types of construction can be used,
such as profiled metal sheets, cladding panels or glass and aluminium
curtain walling. Each has advantages and disadvantages that need to be
understood if the façade is to be maintained and risks properly
managed.
Risk management involves understanding the risks and implementing a practical
plan for dealing with them. Proper management procedures will help owners
and occupiers to demonstrate to insurers (and if necessary the courts)
that they have taken reasonable steps towards discharging their legal
responsibilities.
The leaflet advises on liabilities and obligations, and on aspects of
the different risk management strategies that should implemented at different
times in the life of a building: condition surveys, planned inspection
and maintenance, component durability, inspection frequency and whole
life performance.
The industry partners involved in producing the guidance leaflet were:
Lane & Partners, Hammond Suddards Edge and the Association of British
Insurers.
The guide can be downloaded from the BRE website at http://www.bre.co.uk/services/Facades.html

Support for lnstallers from HW Plastics
Hot
on the heels of its Approved lnstaller Membership Scheme (AIMS) comes
a new suite of literature from HW Plastics, designed to help installers
generate sales in the increasingly competitive consumer market.
The literature, which is available to installers of both HW Systems and
Spectus profile. is a new departure for HW plastics, providing additional
marketing support for its installer customers.
The contemporary appeal of the 'Living Homes' brochures has been specially
designed to capture the imagination of the consumer market. HW Systems
undertook market research to ensure that they meet the requirements of
its audience. Strong use of attractive design shots and simple yet valuable
description of products and their functions, as well as all-important
explanation of building regulations ensures that the brochures will be
genuinely useful to the consumer - making them a valuable sales tool.
HW Plastics' Gareth Griffin comments on the importance of providing literature
such as this: 'Installers form the lifeline between us and the home-owner.
Thus we have made it a strategic priority to offer them as much support
as we can in the marketing of our products. Literature such as this can
form a vital tool for the salesman, as consumers will always prefer to
buy a product that they feel they understand.'

Whiteline
Templates help customers visualise glazing designs within doors and window
frames
The
Whiteline Group, the South East trade fabricator of PVCu windows and doors,
has come up with a new approach to selling decorative glass. A template
library is included in its latest brochure, allowing customers to picture
exactly how the design they have selected will look within their chosen
Goldline window, door or conservatory.
Located in the centre of the 12-page full colour brochure, window and
door 'cut outs' in White, Mahogany and Golden Oak are included. Customers
simply press out the templates and place over the decorative glass design
of their choice to see exactly how their new door or window will look.
Compiled following extensive research among Whiteline's glazed customers,
all of the most popular decorative glass designs can be found in a range
which has been rationalised to make selection simpler. Options include
bevelled and lead & film designs for half/quarter doors, fanlights
and bay window fanlights.
Every decorative glass design is illustrated in full colour, with generous
sized images making it easier to visualise the finished product.
Handcrafted in Whiteline's specialist studio, alternative finishes are
also available. Lead, supplied as standard with soldered joints and a
blackened finish, may be specified in a choice of blackened and boned
or natural and boned finish.
Customers may also specify alternative film colours to match their interior
decor.
Decorative glass sales are expected to increase when the brochure becomes
available this month - accessible to all approved Goldline and Goldline
70 installers. As with all Whiteline marketing material, literature costs
can be offset against customer's individual Marketing Reward Programme.
