TREMCO SEALANT PERFORMANCE IN EVIDENCE ON MIDDLE EAST PROJECTS

Landmark Middle East buildings such as the Emirates Towers Hotel in Dubai have demonstrated the performance and versatility available through the use of Tremco's specialised glazing sealant systems.

The colossal triangular structure, which dominates the skyline above the Sheikh Zayed Road, is just one of several recently completed projects where Al Abbar Aluminium, a major curtain walling contractor in the Middle East, turned to Tremco technology to facilitate the successful completion of its building enclosures.

On the Emirates Tower Hotel, constructed for HRH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Crown Prince of Dubai, by main contractor, Besix - Ssangyong JV, Tremco supplied its Proglaze II multi-component silicone and SGT 920 urethane foam tape for the execution of two-sided structural glazing. Tremsil 500 silicone sealant and Dymonic and Dymeric products were employed for weathersealing and construction joints.

Tremco has extensive Middle East experience of supplying glazing products for some of the world's tallest buildings, specified to deal with the most demanding structural and ciimatic conditions.

SHEERFRAME SASH WINDOWS A WINNER FOR AWARD WINNING COPTHORN HOMES

Sheerframe windows, installed by Lockerbie company BLW, feature in the award winning properties at Copthorn Homes' Beaulieu Park development in Chelmsford, Essex.

The development, which features Sheerframe traditionally sliding sash windows in American colonial style designs and American Shaker-inspired colours, was joint winner of the prestigious Silver Award for Best Exterior Design at the recent What House? Awards ceremony at the Grosvenor Hotel in Park Lane. Together with its parent company Countryside Properties Plc, Copthorn Homes also scooped the ultimate accolade of House Builder of the Year Award for 2001.

Commenting on the award, Copthorn Marketing Director Neil Armstrong said: 'We have received many industry awards in the past but this is the first time we have entered the external design category at What House?. Our success is an indication that new homes need not be boring or predictable in their external appearance'.

The Sheerframe white PVC fully welded sash windows were made and installed by Lockerbie based BLW who also used Sheerframe profile to create the glazed walkways which lead from the main Living area to self-contained studios above garages for some of the larger houses on the prestigious development.

Windows are set off by the strong shades of wild bayberry, soldier blue and New England red weatherboarding and rich cream renders, and decorative brickwork - all features of the homes on Beaulieu Park.

Sheerframe windows are extensively used by housebuilders across the UK. All Sheerframe styles, including the vertically sliding sash, comply with the new thermal performance requirements under Part L of the new Building Regulations.

PILKINGTON PROFILIT™ TO OFFER A NEW ANGLE IN THE CREATION OF CURVED OFFICES

The stylish Cabot Square offices of top advertising agency the Ogilvy Group, situated in London's Docklands, enjoy a new angle in internal office planning by being curved and semi-translucent. To achieve this effect created for one of the world's biggest agencies, the architects chose Reglit Profiled Glass Architecture to design and install Pilkington Profilit™, the stylish yet practical architectural glazing system.

During almost a year of refurbishment, 105,000 feet2 of offices were re-fitted for the 900 staff of Ogilvy & Mather, the well-known above-the-line advertising agency, Ogilvy One, the below-the-line agency and Ogilvy Interactive, a new media company. With each floor area the size of a football pitch, some difficult design and logistics issues needed to be overcome. In the words of Ogilvy Group's Project Manager Carol Kavanagh: 'It was more an issue of urban planning than interior design'.

As befits a company that has created some of the world's most memorable advertising images, the Ogilvy Group offices had to offer visual impact whilst remaining practical in daily use. Two types of office were needed: fully enclosed cellular offices that would offer total privacy for senior members of the agency, and for middle management and others requiring some privacy, semi private spaces. It was also important to break up the huge open spaces of each floor.

Architects Buschow Henley approached Reglit Profiled Glass Architecture, the sole
UK distributor for Pilkington ProfilitTM, which uses a series of interlocking glass 'planks' that can be combined vertically or horizontally to produce a distinctive external or intemal feature. Formerly known as Reglit in the UK, Pilkington ProfilitTM is available in opaque or clear glass, and may be coloured or etched to further individualise the application.

Commented Carol Kavanagh: 'Pilkington ProfilitTM was chosen by our architects
because of its appearance and, being semi-transparent it offers privacy whilst maintaining an airy and open feel. The product also allowed our designers the
opportunity to create a series of freestanding, flowing, curved spaces instead of the usual angular internal office divisions. The scheme has been warmly welcomed by all staff that are housed in these types of offices.'

Wright Style Supplies Hong Kong Medical Centre

Wright Style, UK supplier of steel glazing systems, has successfully completed a prestigious contract to supply the University of Hong Kong with a range of high-performance glazing products.

The newly-completed HK$1.02 billion medical centre comprises 17 teaching and research departments, with over 1,000 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate medical students. The medical faculty dates back to the very beginning of the University in 1912.

The medical centre comprises two buildings of ten and 13 stories, with an overall floor area of 67,000 square metres - and a glazed area of some 37,000 square metres.

Wright Style, based in Devizes, Wiltshire, supplied approximately 750 square metres of specialist fire-resistant glazing systems, and which included:
SR series curtain walling system, for 30 minutes integrity and insulation.

This system was installed to protect the external fire escape staircase, but also to match with the adjacent areas of non-fire resistant curtain walling.

This was achieved by over cladding the 'slimline' SR series curtain walling profiles, to match the overall dimensions ofthe adjacent contemporary aluminium system.

The system had to accommodate large individual spans, yet still meet with the design wind load associated with Hong Kong projects.

To some ofthe elevations the SR curtain walling was faceted, to accommodate the curvature ofthe elevation design.

F1 Series windows, screens and doors, for 30 minutes integrity and insulation.
This involved the installation of fire-rated faceted screens, to isolate the high-risk areas on escape routes, to both first and second floor levels.

Part ofthe task was to ensure minimal sightlines with a system that could accommodate either 20mm or 40mm insulated fire resistant glass without changing the external appearance. This was achieved by tape glazing the F1 Series system, using a specially-developed hidden fixing snap over glazing bead.

F30 Insulated Glass.
The systems were glazed with Wright Style's new F series fire resistant glass, incorporating an additional external layer of blue high-performance solar energy absorbing glass. The glass provides 30 minutes integrity and insulation fire resistance, yet had to look identical in appearance to the adjacent non fire resistant elevations.

The attention to both form and function is a key element in Wright Style's system development programmes, along with its commitment to work in partnership with architects and specifiers, to provide both standard and bespoke systems.

The project architects for the University of Hong Kong project were Kwan-PTP Architects & Hospital Planners Ltd, whilst installation was carried out on behalf of the contractors, by Tak Woo Hong Kong Engineering Ltd - a Wright Style licensed fabricator.

'By having a network of accredited fabricators in many parts of the world, Wright Style is able to offer a comprehensive range of fire and security steel glazing products, with the advantage of quality-assured local installation.

'At the end oflast year, Wright Style Ltd launched an integrated range of competitively priced fire-resistant glasses. This allows the company to provide a unique combination of steel systems and fire resistant glass, thus offering a total glazing solution to its customers, whilst lowering costs and significantly reducing delivery times.' says the company.

The company now supplies inclusive systems of fire-rated glazing for both integrity only and integrity and insulation, as defined under BS 476 Part 22.

The Wright Style integrated systems use Fire-Gard or Fire-Gard Lite, for integrity only applications up to 60 minutes, in both single glazed or double glazed formats. WSL F-Glass is used for integrity and insulation applications, from 30 to 120 minutes inclusive. Together, they cover the complete spectrum for fire-resistance glass, and are tested and classified as a Class A safety glass, with excellent optical and sound reduction properties.

Wright Style offers fabricator training and a full technical support service on its complete range ofproducts and systems.

"Is this the most complicated Conservatory ever built?" asks Graham Daniels of Bentley Conservatories.

Bentley Conservatories of Melton Mowbray has fitted its most complicated Conservatory ever, onto a house in Northamptonshire.

'This 9m x 7.5m giant could be called a "Three facet Victorian style, Hardwood Conservatory with Lantern roof and side wing" but that would not do it justice', explains Graham Daniels, Special Projects Designer at Bentley.

Three facet Victorian style Hardwood Conservatory with Lantern roof and side wing from Bentley Conservatories

It has extra high sided frames with Georgian Fanlights all around above the doors to give additional height. Two sets of double French doors plus one single door provides access to the garden. It has dozens of opening windows and for additional ventilation, eight of the side windows in the lantern open electronically.

For the technically minded, the design features an unusual roof, which hips back towards the house into a special rear box gutter. This gutter had to be made with three ninety-degree bends to go around parts of the house. It also had to be wide enough to be used as a walkway and strong enough to support people for maintenance and the whole Conservatory roof. The roof has four hips, two valleys, two ridge heights and the Victorian end.

All double glazed sealed units are made from Pilkington K toughened safety glass with the addition of an Antisun tint in the roof glass.

Underfloor heating, gorgeous ceramic tiles, a Large Water Feature and of course air conditioning complete a superb extension.

Graham Daniels, Special Projects Designer at Bentley Conservatories, believes that this building with all its features is probably the most complicated ever built anywhere in the country.

SIEGENIA GOES TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH FOR ITS LATEST INSTALLATION

The work of a specialist team has resulted in hardware from leading manufacturer, Siegenia-Frank (UK) Ltd, embarking on a journey that will end with its installation in a research centre in Antarctica.

The British Antarctic Survey required high performance window hardware in its research base at Bird Island, near South Georgia, to withstand the extreme weather conditions of the Antarctic. Siegenia tilt and turn gearing was originally installed in windows at the site fifteen years ago and, when a new component was required, the British Antarctic Survey contacted Siegenia who set up a specialist team to identify and replace the component parts.

The project involved close collaboration between Siegenia, BAS staff on-site in the Antarctic and Cambridge-based component specialist, Douglas Hodgson Window and Door Fittings, to identify the exact components required and provide replacement tilt and turn hardware for windows at the British Antarctic Survey research base.

Lee Adams, regional sales manager for Siegenia, says, 'This project was particularly unusual, as we were unable to see the components required or visit the site! Consequently, BAS staff on site sent photographs of the component parts via email, from which we worked to identify the gearing required for this specialist installation.'

The British Antarctic Survey supports five stations in the Antarctic region. The work of the BAS aims to address key global and regional issues through a programme of scientific research, survey and monitoring in the Antarctic and related regions.

Douglas Hodgson Window and Door Fittings sources current and specialist window and door fittings for the repair market. Siegenia-Frank is a member of the GGF and market leader in the development and supply of window and door hardware and ventilation solutions to the refurbishment and new build markets.

Performing For PFI

The supply of over 3,300 internal doorsets to a new hospital in Wishaw clearly demonstrates the challenges faced by manufacturers with major PFI contracts. Meeting these demands involves not only substantial manufacturing capacity and resources but also new initiatives such as project management.

Leading performance doorset manufacturer Leaderflush+Shapland was selected by contractor Swift Horsman on the New Law Hospital contract because of the company's experience in PFI and provision of a project management service.

Leaderflush+Shapland is the only doorset manufacturer to offer this service, where an individual Project Manager overseas the contract from the earliest stages through to completion - and beyond - providing a single point of contact and maximising efficiency. Project management allowed the straightforward co-ordination of 75 different deliveries over a period of only 7 months. Leaderflush+Shapland has now delivered almost 20,000 doorsets to PFI hospital projects in the UK.

Various styles of doorsets were supplied to the New Law Hospital contract to suit the designs of the four sectors, each with 3 or 4 levels. Door finishes included American Cherry veneer, as well as easily cleaned coloured laminates, all with hardwood lipped edges and some doors incorporated ladder style vision panels. Performance requirements included 60 minutes fire resistance, fully accredited under the BWF-CERTIFIRE scheme, as well as lead-lined doors for X-ray protection: this is the first PFI hospital project to have radiology installed. Innovative concealed closers were also used on some doors with the closer mechanism housed in the frame head.

This avoids the need for disruptive and expensive floor springs. The concealed closers were developed specifically for PFI hospital projects by Dorma working with Leaderflush+Shapland which holds the fire certification.

Attractive protection from C3S Securiglass

The specialist UK processor and stockholder of safety, security and fire resistant glass - C3S Securiglass has the capability to supply a range of products to cater for even the most demanding architectural designs.
The need for providing a protective glass that is flexible in design yet performs consistently, is becoming increasingly important as architects and designers demand creative solutions that are compatible with innovative architecture.

To meet this need, C3S Securiglass provides a wide range of products in different thicknesses and finishes with a range of framing types. These products can be supplied within a short lead time to ensure that even the tightest of deadlines are met.

C3S Securiglass recently took part in supplying (and installing) all the fire resistant glass within some of the David Lloyd leisure and fitness centres in the UK. Working closely alongside the architects, Bowman & Riley, from the design through to the installation, C3S Securiglass provided a result that whilst aesthetically-pleasing, maintained all the fire resistant capabilities that were necessary for the safety of the leisure centre customers.

Pyrobel, a partially and fully insulating fire resistant glass, was the main fire resistant glass used in the David Lloyd projects. Pyrobel can provide up to 120 minutes stability when subjected to fire. Composed of float glass and intumescent interlayers, Pyrobel prevents the passage of heat, smoke and hot gasses during a fire, as well as turning opaque. These properties play a significant part in helping to reduce panic and aiding a safer emergency evacuation.

Whilst C3S Securiglass offer supply only services, it is important to use an installer that is sufficiently qualified to carry out the installation correctly, so that the products retain their protective capabilities. C3S Securiglass recommends that FIRAS trained installers should carry out the work to ensure compliance with British Standards. The company also offers a comprehensive technical advice service to answer queries that installers may have at any stage of the installation.
