Merlin’s Magic brings the future to life!

Somerset based Merlin Software is showing new developments at this years Glassex. Merlin has a long history of supplying software specifically for the window industry. Its Caliburn software plays a leading part in the day to day running of many major window companies including household names.

This year sees the company expanding its market with their industry leading Caliburn V8 software now available in modules specifically tailored to different market sectors from the retail installer buying in perhaps from a 'Super Fabricator', through the smaller fabricators and to the 'Super Fabricators' themselves.

Glassex last year saw the launch of 'Pocket Caliburn'. According to Business Development Manager Ian Sturt 'it is exactly what is says on the label. A version of Caliburn providing automatic pricing facilities and the ability to print quotes and order forms on site installed on a lightweight computer that fits in your pocket'. With prices starting from £649 + VAT for the software and the hand held computer to run it, this must be the most affordable way to develop faster and more accurate pricing and a more professional presentation.

This year at Glassex Merlin will be demonstrating how orders can be priced and surveyed on a Palm using Pocket Caliburn and sent directly to a supplier to drop into their Caliburn system as a pre processed order.

Vertical integration is the key phrase at Merlin. Managing Director, Paul Hamblin comments 'We can support every stage of the business from the initial enquiry to the salesman or sole trader sat in front of the home owner with a lap top or hand held computer. Then through survey, manufacture and installation to invoicing, credit control, after sale and managing guarantees.

'Within Caliburn V8 data is transferred from stage to stage down the chain, potentially as far as the profile supplier.

The future has arrived with the ability of Caliburn V8 users to take the software anywhere. Details entered on the Palm or a laptop can be sent directly to a manufacturing version of Caliburn V8 and a cutting sheet produced. Infrared and mobile technology combined with e-mail means a surveyor can send the details in from anywhere the country while he is still on site and the product could even be on the shop floor before he leaves the customers house. Time and errors are eliminated by taking away the re entry of data and the struggle to read handwritten sizes that are the curse of order processors throughout the industry.

Caliburn V8 can also offer online or remote quotation and ordering. Trade fabricators could arrive in the morning to find their main customers have already processed that days work for them. All they have to do is print the work sheets (and the invoices). Caliburn V8 can also give system companies the ability to offer smaller manufacturers the facility to generate their cutting lists online eliminating the need to invest large sums of money in supporting software into start ups before they have proved themselves.

Many of the industry’s most successful companies are users of Caliburn software from Merlin. Businesses that are leading the way have realised that they have to do more than make windows. They need to manage enquiries, control quality and lead times, provide a high level of service and help their trade customers sell their products. Many front runners will already have, or be planning to introduce, dealer software packages that give their customers an edge in the marketplace.

The Caliburn V8 Dealer Package can potentially be supplied pre set up with the supplier’s products and prices. Dealers can quote and process windows, doors and conservatories with superb quality of presentation. The software then can provide a detailed cost analysis as well as purchase orders for frames, glass, conservatory roofs and base works at the click of a mouse. If dealers don’t want the full dealer package Dealer versions of the Palm based pocket Caliburn are available.

The range of options available from Merlin in Caliburn V8 means that they probably do have something to suit any business in the window industry, large or small. PVC-U, aluminium and timber are all fully supported as are unit manufacturers, panel suppliers and curtain walling specialists.

The success of Merlin in expanding their market is reflected in the recent move to new premises on the Bancombe Road Trading Estate in Somerton where additional space is available to provide better presentation and training facilities in addition to housing the increased number of support staff. The success is certain to continue with the amount of interest currently being shown in the company’s software range.
