Chiltern Dynamics Paves the Way for prEN 14351-1

Chiltern Dynamics and sister company BM TRADA Certification will pave the way for prEN 14351-1 Product Standard for pedestrian doors and windows without fire resistance by staging a major conference for the door and window industry in the autumn.

The event entitled ‘European Openings’ will be held in London on Monday 17th October and repeated in Leeds on Thursday 10th November, with the full support of major industry bodies including the Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA), Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF) and Door & Hardware Federation (DHF).

All products used, including doors and windows, must enable construction works to comply with the essential requirements of the Construction Products Directive regarding health, safety and energy economy. CE marking of products shows whether products are suitable and can begin once the Product Standard has been published.

The latest information suggests that prEN 14351-1 will be published early in 2006 for formal vote. Window and door manufacturers will have to move quickly on testing when the Product Standard is published and will have a limited time to provide test evidence that their products comply with the Construction Products Directive, a legal requirement. They will also need to supply test evidence from a Notified Body such as BM TRADA, that their products conform to the relevant performance criteria listed in Annex ZA of the product standard.

According to Marketing Manager Tom Gregory, Chiltern Dynamics and BM TRADA have organised this conference ‘to help the industry prepare for the Product Standard’. Technical and industry experts will cover:

* Background and context
* The document itself
* Performance requirements
* How compliance is demonstrated
* Test requirements and interpretation
* Implications for the industry.

European Openings is aimed at manufacturers of doors, windows, hardware, glass and seals, as well as architects, specifiers, housing providers and regulators (Building Control, Approved Inspectors).

fensterbau/frontale and HOLZ-HANDWERK 2006

Around 1,200 exhibitors and 92,000 trade visitors - the success of the combined fensterbau/frontale and HOLZ-HANDWERK 2004 exhibitions in Nürnberg even surprised insiders. Preparations are now underway for the next edition in Nuremberg from 22-25 March 2006.

Time and money have always been scarce commodities - and the situation has become more aggravated in the past years in view of the recessionary market trend and a variety of events; exhibiting and visiting exhibitions are subject to closer scrutiny than ever before. All the more understandable that exhibitors and visitors expect one thing in particular from an exhibition: a high return on their investment.

'The exhibition combination of fensterbau/frontale and HOLZ-HANDWERK held in Nürnberg since 1992 is proof of how the combination of related themes can create efficiency for both exhibitors and visitors,' says Walter Hufnagel, Member of the Management Board of NürnbergMesse. 'Clearly defined concepts geared to target groups, a good cost-benefit ratio, a compact exhibition centre and easy access to services - this is our creed for trade fairs in Nürnberg.'

The figures for the Nürnberg exhibition duo show that this works out: The first time the two exhibitions were organised concurrently in 1992, a good 63,000 trade visitors sourced information from 840 exhibitors - in 2004 there were over 92,000 trade visitors and 1,200 exhibitors. Apart from the bare figures, the good results of independent surveys speak of a high level of satisfaction among exhibitors and visitors.

The combined exhibitions in Nürnberg next year will again become an indispensable professional get-together for the window and facade technology and woodworking sectors. In addition to the extensive range of products from the exhibiting companies with numerous new products and innovations expected, visitors can again count on an informative supporting programme. The Forum Architecture during fensterbau/frontale with work reports from top international speakers and over 800 participants at the last event is continued, likewise the action forum vector organised by the VDMA Fachverband Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen and the ProWood Stiftung with live demonstrations from various product segments of HOLZ-HANDWERK.

'In the long term, exhibitions will only be successful if they meet the demands of exhibitors and visitors to a high degree and are based on economic reality,' says a convinced Walter Hufnagel. 'Nürnberg with its proven quality will stand out from the variety of building events announced for 2006.'

Coastal Open Day

Tuesday 14th June saw Spectus trade fabricator Coastal open its doors to customers. An open day was held at the company's factory in Poole to demonstrate the wide range of products and services Coastal can supply.

The day was fully supported by Coastal's suppliers. They include Spectus Window Systems who supplies the profile used to manufacture Coastal's Salisbury window, Exeter door and the ‘Vale’ Vertical Sliding Window.

‘The day was a great success,’ said Jeremy Beling, Coastal's Managing Director. ‘Many customers turned up to view the exhibits and learn more about our range of products. One of Coastal's strengths is the wide range of products we can supply. From casement windows to conservatory roofs and from residential and sliding patio doors to vertical sliding windows.’

Jeremy is pictured here with Stuart Barnes of Stuart Barnes Limited in Weymouth. Stuart says ‘We've had a very enjoyable day looking at the exhibits and meeting the suppliers. I am particularly interested in the Salisbury window. It has a long list of features, including co-extruded seals, five chambers, shape on both beads and profile and a single leg knock in bead. It looks great and the single leg knock in bead will be of great benefit on site.’

Sarah Garland of 3-D Wyndows in Warwick was especially taken with the vertical-sliding window. ‘It is such a great looking window and we are getting more and more interest from people wanting to retain the character of their homes whilst enjoying the benefits of PVC-U.’

On the day there was lots to eat and drink and an artist drawing caricatures of guests. Jeremy concludes, ‘Everybody had a good time; customers, suppliers and ourselves. It was a rare opportunity for all of us to get together for a chat in an informal atmosphere. I am sure everybody took something away with them.’

GM Fundraising Turns Up the Heat for Golfers

The tree-lined fairways and glassy greens of the Hawkstone Park, Windmill Course provided both a test of golf and a stunning backdrop to the 2005 GM Fundraising Golf Day. With hot and breezy weather, the golf experience was more akin to Spain than Shropshire and conditions favoured the low-handicappers. The competition for prizes in the Team Stableford event was nevertheless intense and spectators witnessed some extraordinary golf.

The Promac Group foursome of David Stockton-Chalk, Scott Haslingden, David Higgs and Joe Hague won the competition with an excellent score of 90 points. Joe Hague of Promac, playing off a handicap of 6 won the prize for best individual with an impressive 40 points.

Pushing them hard with 88 points were runners-up, KEB Fabrications (above) represented by Andy Flavell, Neil Preston, Mark Willis and Sid Smart.

Wendland Roof Solution’s Iain McInnes won the 18-Hole Putting Competition, with a score of 35 despite ‘allegedly’ not having played for four years. GM Fundraising founder, Gary Morton also took the opportunity to present him with the Rider of the Tour Yellow Jersey from the recent GM Fundraising John O’Groats-Lands End Cycle Ride.

Prizes were also awarded for two Nearest-the-pin holes, two Longest Drive holes and Conservatory Roof Craft sheepishly collected suitably tacky plastic trophies for coming last with a score too embarrassing to record here.

Following the Presentation Dinner, comedian Jimmy Bright, provided excellent entertainment with his deadpan delivery, dry wit and observations on life. A subsequent raffle and charity auction was generously supported by all present, with the whole day raising nearly £11,000 for the children of Hope House Hospice.

In his closing remarks, Gary Morton expressed thanks to the sponsors, auction bidders and participating teams, on behalf of GM Fundraising and the team at Hope House who provide palliative care for children with terminal conditions. Among the event sponsors were Business Micro’s, Maco UK, Machinery Finance & Leasing, Promac Group, Fenestra Journal and Graphisign.

Adding Support to Timber Zone at Interbuild

More leading companies are following the example of Eleco and Akzo Nobel in backing a concerted push by TRADA, the Timber Research & Development Association, to raise the profile of timber at Interbuild 2006.

Kelly Brothers, JTD Timber Frame and the Malaysian Timber Council have now confirmed they will be prominently positioned in that section of Interbuild when the show takes place at the NEC from April 23-27.

And Lilleheden, Vincent Timber and American Softwoods have committed to taking stands alongside the Timber Zone.

The move to introduce a specialist zone was inspired by Rupert Scott, TRADA's Marketing Manager, who explained: 'I was impressed at Interbuild 2004 by the dedicated sections for architects and off-site construction and it led me to suggest that in such a big show, having a Timber Zone would give it much more of an impact.

'Interbuild is keen to attract more specifiers while we want to get our information over to them so the whole thing makes sense. Bringing both parties together is what exhibitions like this are all about. It's a win-win situation as far as I'm concerned.'

The specially designed zone will have a prime location in the main Structural Hall, next to the Canadian Village and the off-site manufacturing zone, and en-route to the hand tools area, popular with builders and professionals alike.

The zone will also include a case study gallery, showing winners and runners-up from the 2005 Wood Awards, while architects, engineers, contractors and members of the timber industry will be able to 'Ask the expert', with TRADA consultants on hand to answer technical questions.

A detailed programme of seminars will run throughout the five days and Mr Scott added: 'The CPD talks by TRADA experts will take place in a seminar theatre in the centre of the zone and exhibitors will have the opportunity to influence the choice of subjects.

'We will draw on the very successful lectures developed by TRADA in conjunction with the promotion campaign 'wood-for-good', which have enabled us to reach over 6,000 professionals in the past four years.

'The seminars are always over-subscribed and we expect a similar level of interest at Interbuild, where CPD certificates will be awarded.'

Interbuild Event Director Gordon Thomas believes the Timber Zone is an exciting new development within the show and he said: 'It's already proving to be a good decision to change direction in 2006 and has been very enthusiastically received across the industry.

'In the past, timber companies have tended to be spread far and wide within the halls but the new development will not only make the area more high profile for the smaller companies but also give larger exhibitors who produce timber products the chance to locate themselves on the fringes of the zone.'

Defra Announces Plans for RWM

Confused about the Landfill Trading Allowance Scheme? Unsure exactly how the Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive will affect you?

To get some straight answers, come to the Legislation Zone at the Recycling and Waste Management Exhibition (RWM05) at the NEC, Birmingham from 13-15 September.

Sponsored by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Legislation Zone, located at Stand 324, has been introduced to provide visitors with specific answers to legislative issues in a relaxed and informal environment.

All RWM05 visitors are welcome to drop in to discuss their legislative queries from Defra, the Environment Agency and the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI).
Short presentations on specific areas of legislation will also take place on the stand throughout the three-day exhibition. These will include:

• WEEE Directive
• New Technologies
• Local Authority Support

John Burns, Programme Director of Defra's Waste Implementation Programme said:
'As the Government continues with its drive to reduce the UK's reliance on landfill by moving to more sustainable waste management practices, it is vital that everyone is clear on what the changes mean to them and what they need to do to comply with new and emerging legislation.

With representatives from key Government departments and agencies, the Legislation Zone is a good place to visit to get clear advice and guidance on today's hot issues in waste.'

Last year's show (RWM04) drew over 300 exhibitors, and the number of audited* visitors rose by 20% to a total of 5,667, making it the UK's leading exhibition for the recycling and waste management industry.

RWM05 is set to break all records and the organisers have already booked extra space at the NEC to accommodate the expected growth.

RWM is organised by Emap Maclaren and supported by the publication Materials Recycling Week.

Full details of the visitor attractions will be will be published on the dedicated exhibition website http://www.rwmexhibition.com over the coming months.

MosBuild+ 2006 - 4-7 April 2006, Moscow, Russia, Crocus International Exhibition Centre

MosBuild+ 2005 Exhibition was the biggest Windows & Doors exhibition ever to be held in Russia. The event hosted over 300 Exhibitors and 40,000 visitors over the four day International Event. A great deal of business was done at the show with tenders being won by many of the companies at the event.

Preparation for the MosBuild+ 2006 Exhibition has already started with 80% of the companies who exhibited in 2005 rebooking space for 2006. All of the companies that have rebooked are taking bigger stands for the 2006 Exhibition and even though there are now two new halls of space available - 6000m2 - because of increased stand sizes space is already nearly all sold out.

Interplas is Reduced to One Hall

Reed Exhibitions has confirmed that Interplas 2005 will now occupy just one hall of the National Exhibition Centre when it takes place on 4-6 October.

The organiser had originally planned to fill both halls four and five, but the show is now being consolidated into hall five as a result of a drastic fall in exhibitor numbers.

When it last ran in 2002, Interplas occupied three halls of the NEC. The latest drop follows more than a decade of steady decline for the exhibition, which filled five halls as recently as 1990.

Interplas exhibition director Ian Crawford has also stated that the audience at Interplas 2005 could be more than 50% down on the previous attendance figures.

In a press release issued by Reed Exhibitions, he said he was confident of delivering 8,100 to 10,800 visitors. This compares to more than 17,000 for the 2002 event, which in turn represented a drop of more than 33% compared to 1999 attendance levels.

Saiedue Living

In five days, 130,071 trade professionals visited the show, an increase of 6.51% compared to the 2004 edition and up 10.41% over the 2003 edition, with similar products on display. The figures rose to +35.1% (+36.52% compared to those for 2003) if we consider the 12,084 visitors from abroad.

The expansion of the Bologna Trade Fair Centre, with the construction of two new exhibition halls 16 and 18, as well as the construction of an additional exhibition hall, 21 bis, led to a total of 164,000 square metres of exhibition space.

Consolidating its position as the most authoritative and accredited international showcase for Italian architecture, Saiedue Living clearly communicated the innovative technology and design content in the products offered by 1,432 exhibitors to visiting delegations of architects, manufacturers, entrepreneurs and large foreign clients. The vice-Ambassador from India took part in the convention 'Italy–India:  New markets and New prospects', organised at Saiedue Living in collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna Region, and acknowledged the high quality and style of Italian products.

The technological evolution evidenced at SATES and in all of the components present at the show was extremely valuable. The increased turnout that was obvious during the first two days of the exhibition immediately created an air of excitement, and finally an overall optimism that it is hoped will come to fruition in the coming months. The companies - exponents of some of the world's best production in terms of doors, windows, curtain walls, floors, wall coverings and stairs, systems for exploiting renewable energy sources, technologies for building renewal and maintenance, machinery for door and window frames, ecological solutions for construction, intelligent systems and home automation, fastening tools and systems and products for security - obviously took full advantage of the opportunity for visibility offered by Saiedue Living by presenting their new products to a global public, finding new markets, new distribution methods, and consolidating or improving their position in every market segment.

Enthusiastic judges welcomed the special events of the twenty-fourth edition of Saiedue Living. The innovative walls and façades of Verticalia surprised and excited visitors with the rich technological, material and expressive nature of the 120 installations on display.

At Saiedue Living, the Building Envelope, organised by Uncsaal in collaboration with Federlegno-Arredo and O.N. Organizzazione Nike, captured the attention of the visitors by presenting eight large architectural works and samples of the various façades: Brembo headquarters in Bergamo, by Jean Nouvel, the Padua fashion city by Aurelio Galletti, Taipei 101 in Taiwan by C.Y. Lee & Partners, the Ensemble Immobilier Ponant III in Paris by Valode & Pistre Architectes, the restoration of the Pirelli Skyscraper in Milan by Renato Sarno Group and Corvino + Multari Architetti, the Pirelli Headquarters in Milan-Bicocca by Gregotti Associati International, the roof and glass surfaces of the new Milan headquarters of Il Sole 24 Ore by Renzo Piano RPBW-Paris.

The initiatives, dedicated to the topic of safe living such as the burglar resistance tests at Securbuilding, attracted great interest: the public witnessed live the attempts at break-ins, crime and flame attacks by qualified technicians on armoured doors, windows, and glass. Still within the framework of the Securbuilding show, the international companies introduced advanced solutions for protecting living spaces. From burglar-proof glass to electronic locks, from drill-proof plates, latch and cutwater to biometric access control systems, to reassure those who live or work in buildings.

Important industry associations, leading publishers and the big names in architecture were brought in to enliven a convention schedule brimming with over 60 appointments, covering topics of utmost actuality such as ecology, security and energy savings.

A major new development awaits professionals in 2006: Saiedue Living will move the opening to Tuesday 14th March and close on Saturday 18th March, and the Bologna Trade Fair Centre will be the place to celebrate the important milestone of 25 years of business.

Corby has Open Day with EVie

Over 150 customers came to visit The Corby Windows Group open days held on 28th and 29th January. Corby now manufactures 3000 frames a week from three sites in the West Midlands with a staff of over 300. In preparation for the open day four manufacturing benches were removed from the factory to make way for 11 display stands. EVie, the state of the art exhibition vehicle had pride of place outside. There were also pockets of live demonstrations around the factory so every part of the manufacturing process was shown.

‘We had spent a lot of time in preparation for the day,’ explained Jason Wilder, Corby’s Managing Director. ‘We wanted our customers to have the chance to see exactly what we do, and how a high-quality manufacturing process works. That’s why we opened up the factory. We were supported by several suppliers including Synseal. At first sight, EVie, the state of the art exhibition vehicle, is impressive. But, it’s what’s inside that makes the difference. Customers can pull out a roof rafter and touch the bolts as well as seeing the finished roof. Holding and handling the products in the flesh is so different from looking at a spec sheet.

We’ve already had Global roof orders from companies there on the day, which previously had only ever ordered window and door frames. One customer was so impressed he had two roofs on order with another supplier and cancelled them once he’d seen Global and ordered them from us.

‘The other key purpose of the open day was to cement relationships. Our customers know our drivers and our sales people but are not likely to have met the Customer Service Manager or know who draws up the quotes. This time they got to meet everyone. Each customer was assigned a guide to take them round the site. The senior managers from the other two sites were with us too. I met one customer who I’ve spoken to many times on the phone but not met in seven years. We were glad to have Nick Dutton and Neville Loveridge from Synseal with us to discuss the benefits of Global. The day was frantic and successful. EVie made a difference to winning new conservatory roof business.’

Fenestration China 2005: Good prospects in China

Fenestration China 2005 takes place in Beijing from 16-19 November. The prospects for exhibitors are more than favourable: Experts estimate the market for windows and doors for the coming five years at approximately 200 million window units per year. Nürnberg Global Fairs acts as official 'overseas co-organiser' at Fenestration China and also organises a German pavilion.

Fenestration China is developing exceptionally well against the background of rapid economic development and especially the booming building sector in the People’s Republic. The last Fenestration China in 2004 succeeded in consolidating its position as China’s biggest international trade fair in the window and facade sector: With 22,000 trade visitors and just under 180 exhibitors from 14 countries, the four-day trade fair last November offered an ideal platform in the Chinese market particularly for foreign companies.

Manufacturers from the USA, Australia, Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain, Canada, Germany and Italy as well as companies from China and the Asian region presented their products on a total area of 15,000 square metres (2003: 11,000 m2). Around one-third of the exhibiting companies were from the window industry, another third from the facade industry, and some 23 per cent of the companies exhibited fittings and accessories. Of the 22,000 trade visitors at the exhibition (2003: 15,600), almost one-third came from the door and window sector, 20 per cent from the facade sector and ten per cent from the material sector. The visitors were also mainly interested in these themes.

The accompanying conference 'Fenestration Days China' offered a top-class programme for the around 180 participants: Just under 30 experts presented professional papers to support knowledge transfer in the window industry.

The exhibitors were extremely satisfied in view of the success achieved by Fenestration China 2004. For example, Patric Hachtel of Helmut Hachtel GmbH, Schwäbisch Hall, rated the number and calibre of the visitors positively: 'We have made valuable business contacts and expect successful follow-up business. We plan to exhibit in the pavilion again next year.' Sven Hlywiak of Konrad Hornschuch AG, Weißbach, also reported success: 'We have achieved all the targets defined before the exhibition, such as new contracts, successful product launch, customer advertising and contact care. We want to be present in China again next year.' A majority of the exhibitors also praised the professional organisation of the event by the organisers.

Exhibiting at Fenestration China 2005 is again simplified for German companies by a pavilion supported by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour. German exhibitors can profit from the co-operation in the German pavilion through low-cost stand packages, relevant technical and organisational support and assistance with travel and customs formalities. The deadline for applications for the pavilion is 29th July 2005 and the next Fenestration China takes place in Peking from 16-19 November 2005.

fensterbau/frontale RUSSIA 2005: Good prospects for the future

The première of fensterbau/frontale RUSSIA 2005 in Moscow from 26-28 January was very promising: The German government took part in the very first year with an official German pavilion. Organisers and exhibitors were satisfied with the net hired display area of just under 2,100 square metres, the total of 94 exhibiting companies and the around 3,500 trade visitors; the concept and theme of the trade fair and the accompanying conference were convincing. Likewise the continuing good prospects of the window market in Russia, where companies expect growth rates of up to 20 per cent for the current year.

Nürnberg Global Fairs together with Central European Exhibitions organised the trade fair - an offshoot of the well-known fensterbau/frontale in Nürnberg - in pavilion 7 of the Moscow EXPOCENTR, the most modern and newest exhibition hall in the city centre. The organisers achieved their first success even before the première: At the initiative of the Verband der Fenster- und Fassadenhersteller e.V. (VFF) in Frankfurt, an official German pavilion was organised in the very first year of the exhibition. Eighteen German companies exhibited in Moscow under the same roof and design in the pavilion sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour and organised by Nürnberg Global Fairs.

The exhibitors at the trade fair for window and facade construction included companies from Belgium and Finland, as well as from Greece, Great Britain, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Russia and Turkey. A total of ten nations were represented and 40 per cent of the companies came from abroad. The use of a computer-aided visitor registration system enabled accurate evaluation and analysis of the visitor data. Particularly specialists from Central Russia were interested in talking to the experts on the exhibition stands; the satisfied exhibitors praised the high quality of the business contacts: 'We are satisfied with the contacts made and the calibre of the trade visitors. fensterbau/frontale RUSSIA offered us a good platform for gaining new customers,' says Josef Leo Beckhoff of VEKA AG in Germany. A statement that George Kardiakidis from the Greek company ETEM S.A. also confirms: 'Our products experienced an excellent response on the market after our presentation at fensterbau/frontale RUSSIA.' The companies also rate future business expectations and the service provided by the organisers favourably. Quite a few exhibitors announced their intention to exhibit again at the next trade fair in Moscow straight after the event - including, for example, Alberto Costa from the internationally operating emmegigroup in Italy.

The international conference 'Fenestration Days RUSSIA', which took place parallel to the exhibition on 25-26 January, also attracted a good response: 'The conference visit was thoroughly worthwhile - we were delighted with the top-class papers and well-known speakers,' was ETEM representative Kardiakidis’ final verdict on the event. In his conference presentation, Dr. Thomas W. Büttner, General Manager of the German Verband der Fenster- und Fassadenhersteller, established the link between the Russian and European window market. Other plenary presentations provided information about the investment climate in Russia, trends in the building sector, such as in high-rise buildings, and window and facade systems for the continental climate - market segments that are still growing rapidly in Russia and promise high growth rates in the coming years, also increasingly outside the cities of over a million inhabitants.

More information about the next fensterbau/frontale RUSSIA, which takes place in Moscow from 31 January to 2 February 2006, is available on the Internet at http://www.frontale-russia.com
