Polyclose: European Trade Fair for Windows, Doors and Blinds

The European trade fair Polyclose will be held for the 12th time at the Flanders Expo in Ghent on Thursday, January 19th to Saturday, 21st January 2006.

With an area of about 28,000 m2, the fair will have more than 380 international exhibitors and expects to draw about 16,000 visitors.

Polyclose, still the key to international market supply

A quick look at what will be on offer
In addition to the traditional sectors that made Polyclose great, profiles (PVC, aluminium and steel), window systems, roller doors, door panels, veranda systems, safety and automatic locking systems, access control, hinges and locks, sealing materials, ventilation grids, machines and tools, glass and accessories, software.

The sunblind group has grown into a full-fledged sector with 30 exhibitors. Other sectors present at the fair are also certain to expand in the future.

Polyclose is not a Belgian but an international event
Polyclose is a genuinely international fair of European stature and will be mentioned by people involved in this sector in the same breath as the French Equip'Bai and the German Fensterbau. Thanks to this international flavour, Polyclose welcomed 68 German, 53 Italian, 37 Dutch and 25 French exhibitors in 2004. That meant that 62 % of the exhibitors came from outside Belgium. No wonder that the number of foreign visitors (4069) amounted to nearly 28% of the total, with the Dutch and French share of the foreign visitor contingent accounting for 79% and 16% respectively.

Biennial fair guarantees innovation

Since 1998, the fair has been held every two years, partially at the request of the market. Most exhibitors find this a good move. It gives them time to develop innovations or improve their existing products. The average stand will also be larger in size in 2006. A growing number of exhibitors are paying extra attention - and therefore spending more money - on how they dress up and finish their stands.

This edition of the fair will again use the main hall and two adjacent halls to accommodate all exhibitors. And to give you a quick glimpse of what you can expect, a few of them include: Industrial doors: Besam, Geze, Tormax and Kaba. Computerisation: Somer, Ditec, Beninca, BFT, Faac, Nice, Came and Dea. Virtually all the big names in the area of aluminium and plastic processing machines will also be represented at Polyclose. It will be no surprise that 95 percent of the exhibition space had already been booked by mid-September.

Polyclose wouldn't be the same without fittings

The international character of Polyclose is pretty well reflected by most stands. A good example of this is the AMI company. AMI is a manufacturer of aluminium building fittings, based in Lomm in The Netherlands. Together with Dr. Hahn, Kipan and Ansae, the company has been represented at the fair for years and all four are suppliers for the BHB (‘Bouwbeslag Handel Benelux’ - or Benelux Building Fittings Industry). With other producers of fittings, they have an extensive range of fittings on offer, which will be on display at Polyclose.

There are no complaints from the exhibitors about the quality of the fair. Compared to other trade fairs, Polyclose stands out as a specialist event. ‘It is quite noticeable that they don't drag anyone in just to get more square metres,’ says one of the many exhibitors who keep coming back. The fair has more than proved itself already and has firmly established itself. Specialism is a sound foundation. Ghent, a fun day out!

If you feel like seeing a bit more of Belgium before or after visiting the fair, you can have a look around Ghent. A beautiful city with astonishing medieval buildings. Many restaurants open their doors and will warmly welcome you to sample their various specialities. If you feel like a preview of the city and what it has to offer, surf to http://www.gent.be.

With Bayern International to Bahrain for Building

Nürnberg Global Fairs in co-operation with the Bahrain Convention & Exhibition Bureau is organising Intelligent Building Middle East (IBME) - International Exhibition & Conference for Building Concepts, Materials and Technologies - in Manama, Bahrain on 5-7 December 2005. The partner for the accompanying three-day conference is the Bahrain Society of Engineers. Bayern International is taking care of the presence of Bavarian companies at the exhibition on intelligent building: The organisation set up by the Bavarian state government promotes foreign trade as part of the 'Future of Bavaria Offensive' – in the case of IBME with a Bavarian pavilion.

Intelligent building in the Middle East means primarily designing buildings that save resources and use energy efficiently. The climatic conditions impose special demands on materials and concepts, but particularly the use of high-grade technologies supports the responsible handling of precious energy sources. Moreover, there is no lack of building projects in the region: Many states from the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Dubai to Qatar are currently investing in impressive large-scale building projects. This offers German companies the opportunity to contribute their technical know-how in a promising market.

The Free State of Bavaria is sponsoring a pavilion at Intelligent Building Middle East as part of the Bavarian programme to promote participation in trade fairs. The financial support of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology and the involvement of Bayern International mean that companies from Bavaria benefit from special conditions for exhibiting and an attractive pavilion.

Bayern International in close co-operation with partners from the state government, trade and industry offers companies based in Bavaria the opportunity to exhibit in pavilions at over 40 foreign exhibitions a year. This includes the première of Intelligent Building Middle East in December 2005, at which altogether 29 companies from the state present their products and services in the Bavarian pavilion. Many fields of building are represented in Bahrain – ranging from plant engineering to admission control systems. The broad spectrum of products reflects the great interest of the Bavarian companies in presenting their know-how and products at the trade fair. The latest information about the complete fair participation programme offered by Bayern International is available at  http://www.bayern-international.de

Glasstech Features New and Proven Automotive and Architectural Bending and Tempering Systems at GLASSTECH ASIA

Glasstech, Inc., the manufacturer of glass bending and tempering equipment, will feature advanced automotive and architectural systems at GLASSTECH ASIA 2005.

The systems being showcased at GLASSTECH ASIA 2005 include two new bending and tempering systems; a system for tempering Low-E glass; a system for bending and tempering deep bend automotive glass; and two systems for the production of automotive sidelites.

Glasstech has a strong presence in Asia. The company recently opened a representative office in Shanghai to better serve its growing Pacific Rim customer base and plans to open an office in India early in 2006.

GLASSTECH ASIA 2005 will take place at the Impact Arena, Bangkok, Thailand, November 30th through December 2nd. Glasstech will be at Stand C-31.

DB™ 4 Advanced Bending and Tempering System
Glasstech has been supplying advanced glass processing systems for more than 30 years.

'Since the mid-1980s, the Glasstech DB™ 4 Advanced Bending and Tempering System has set the worldwide standard for the production of complex, high quality press-bent sidelites, quarterlites and backlites.' says the company.

As the auto industry continues to grow, so does the industry’s need for the efficient production of increasingly complex-shaped glass parts.

Worldwide glass processors continue to require higher productivity, higher quality and higher efficiency from their bending and tempering systems. Glasstech continues to add innovations to the DB 4. Recent enhancements have improved optical quality and shape accuracy and have provided increased glass yield.

The DB 4 Quick-Change tooling and Fast Cycle improvements have reduced tooling changeover time from the traditional 6 hours to 90 minutes or less and have increased output by 20 percent or more. The Quick Change and the Fast Cycle options can be ordered together or separately on new DB 4 systems or retrofitted to existing models.

External Press Bending Systems
Glasstech now has two versions of its External Press Bending (EPB) System.

The Glasstech EPB-SL™ External Press Bending System accommodates a single stream of glass parts and meets the demands of automotive glass processors for sidelites with very accurate peripheral and body shape and the highest optical quality.

The recently introduced Glasstech EPB-DS™ External Press Bending system is a 72-inch (1829mm)-wide system capable of accommodating either a single or dual stream of automotive glass parts. This versatile system can produce the majority of the current automotive sidelites and sunroofs plus a large percentage of the backlites currently on the market.

The EPB-SL and the EPB-DS systems are versatile, efficient, high-throughput systems that bend and temper or heat-strengthen cylindrical-, compound- and complex-shaped parts as well as symmetrical or asymmetrical parts.

Either model can be equipped with the patented Glasstech FanRoll System to pre-form glass inside the furnace, reducing the final press motion and decreasing cycle time. By reducing processing time at the external pressing station, glass can be processed at a lower temperature, improving optical quality.

The EPB-SL and the EPB-DS can be configured as high-capacity systems with cycle times of approximately 7 seconds per load (of one or two parts), or as moderate-capacity systems with cycle times of approximately 15 seconds per load.

The EPB-SL processes parts ranging in length from 381mm to 1220mm and width from 406mm to 864mm. A small-parts option is available that allows processing of parts as small as 254mm by 228mm.

The EPB-DS can accommodate a dual stream of sidelites and smaller parts ranging from 356mm long to 406mm wide up to 1220mm long by 864mm wide. For larger parts, such as backlites, the system processes components as large as 1016mm by 1728mm in a single stream.

CRB-A™ Cylindrical Radius Bending and Tempering System
To meet the needs of vehicle designers who are specifying large, cylindrical symmetrical and asymmetrical sidelites, Glasstech has expanded its popular range of Advanced Cylindrical Radius Benders to include the 1,500mm (59 inches)-wide CRB-A™ model.

This new, wider model is suitable for processing asymmetrical glass sidelites used in buses and railroad passenger cars. The CRB-A system can produce shapes with two radii, J-bends or V-bends.

All CRB systems are designed to produce accurate, high quality cylindrical shapes. The systems are simple and efficient to operate and highly productive. Glass processed on the systems meets exacting tolerances with excellent optical qualities.

The CRB systems process glass from 3mm (.118 inch) to 6mm (.25 inch) in thickness. They do not require part-dedicated tooling and can accomplish part shape changeovers in as little as a few minutes.

FCH2™ Architectural Flat-Glass Tempering System
The Glasstech FCH2™ Architectural Flat-Glass Tempering System is a gas-fired forced convection system that processes clear or coated glass, including hard- and soft-coated Low-E glass.

'Recent comparisons of operating costs for forced convection heating systems show that process costs using gas generally are 50 percent lower than when using electricity, and gas provides 25 percent shorter cycle times. Gas-fired forced convection heating gives processors a definite competitive advantage and offers the lowest energy costs per square foot of glass processed.' says the company.

'The studies also showed forced convection heating is capable of providing improved finished glass quality, including excellent optics, low distortion and superior flatness, when compared to traditional electric radiant heating.'

Under normal circumstances, the FCH2 can heat clear glass at a typical cycle time of 30 seconds per millimeter of thickness and high-performance, soft-coat Low-E glass at a typical cycle time of 33 seconds per millimeter. The latter cycle time is typically half that of traditional electric radiation heating systems. Reduced heating time provides for higher quality with less distortion and dramatically improves productivity and reduces processing cost.

Tight Radius Cylindrical Bending and Tempering System™
The Glasstech 1220mm-wide Tight-Radius Cylindrical Bending and Tempering System™ (TRCB) provides architects and designers with the ability to create attractive retail displays, showcases with minimal framing, advanced shower enclosures, new furniture shapes and one-piece kiosk or booth panels.

Now, Glasstech offers an even wider 1500mm-system to extend the range of products that can be created by designers and architects and offered by glass processors.

The TRCB bends and tempers glass quickly, easily and without tong marks. The system processes glass into cylindrical curves, tight-radius 'V' shapes, combination bends of up to three flat sections and two tight-radius bends, and a wide variety of other symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes. 'The TRCB forms these complex shapes to exacting tolerances with the highest level of uniformity and excellent optical quality.' says the company.

The system uses two interchangeable sets of rollers to create a wide variety of bends. Both sets of rollers are articulated and computer-controlled to bend glass quickly and accurately, eliminating the need for expensive moulds.

Total’s Day at the Races

Total Glass, the UK trade fabricator, hosted a day at Chester Races for 30 key customers. The event is one of several similar occasions organised each year by the company as a way of thanking business owners for their on-going support and contribution to Total’s continuing success.

With transport from Total’s 100,000 sq ft Knowsley production facility, food and hospitality all taken care of, the next most important business of the day was devoted to studying form and having a flutter. But despite their mixed fortunes on the tote, according to Operations Director, Paul Ierston, everyone enjoyed themselves on the day, the highlights of which included a generous three-course lunch.

Victorian Sliders Show Success

Danny Basden's new company - Victorian Sliders Ltd, has followed its launch in September with a success at the recent Homebuilding and Renovating Show at London's ExCeL centre.

The three day show gave the new company the opportunity to display its new vertical sliding window range to a large audience of retail, trade and commercial buyers. Also available on the company’s stand was the new Plastmo composite door, which was shown for the first time and attracted a great deal of interest.

Danny Basden said: ‘I was delighted at the response from the show. We took in excess of 100 quality leads from the self-build market, the new-build market, architects and property developers as well as trade and retail customers. This was our first exhibition as Victorian Sliders Ltd and it has definitely given us a great platform from which to expand our sales into several new market sectors.’

Victorian Sliders Ltd solely manufactures Plastmo Profiles' Charisma vertical sliding window from its dedicated factory in South Wales. The company is also an approved distributor for the new composite door and can now also undertake installation of its VS windows and doors as it has recently become a FENSA registered company.

GGF Sponsors UK Pavilion at Glasstec Asia

The GGF is sponsoring a group of 7 companies to exhibit in a UK pavilion at Glasstech Asia, Bangkok, Thailand, 30th Nov - 2nd Dec 2005. The companies are: Regalead, Cadram, Rapidflame, Strip Tinning Automotive, Graphoidal Developments, LJF (UK) Ltd and Electroglass. Also exhibiting independently are Bassra Machine Tools, North Western Lead and Decorative Resins.

After the Asian financial crisis in 1997, the hollow glass market is slowly but surely picking up. Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and South Korea are reporting slight growth rates, however, the biggest boom in this sector has been taking place in China.

Special areas within the glass industry, such as the production of glass blocks for the building and construction sectors and the manufacturing of drug packaging materials, are having high hopes for the growing markets in the Asia Pacific region. Demand for glass blocks in Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia is estimated at nearly 1 million square metres. Other manufacturers eyeing the huge China market include the entertainment electronics market, the digital sectors, and even glass-ceramics cooking equipment.

There is also growing demand in the cosmetics, fragrances and beauty product sectors, as well as the bottled beverages sector. World carbonated soft drink demand will grow nearly 5% annually, with advances for containers trailing as consumers favour larger, multi serving bottles and cans. Among the larger markets, China and Brazil will grow the fastest. Glass bottles will remain the leading soft drink container, with plastic bottles offering the best growth opportunities.

With continued economic development, rising living standards, increased environmental awareness and the high growth rate of demand in Asia, particularly China, one can only anticipate the tremendous potential and opportunities available in this niche market.

Seminar on Tall Building Solutions

Market trends indicate that the tide is turning in favour of the planning of tall buildings. Tall buildings, by definition, are those developments that are in excess of 30 storeys. There are in excess of 20 tall buildings planned leading up to 2008.

The question mark on such developments is the capability of British firms to successfully deliver these buildings - previous expertise in this new market is a valuable competitive advantage.

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems recognise that this market impetus is one that few architectural practices, contractors and installers can ignore.

To discuss the impact of the supply and design of tall buildings, Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems is holding a day's seminar at RIBA on the 26th October where speakers from industry bodies, such as the CWCT, CAB, as well as Chris Wilkinson, Wilkinson Eyre, Neven Sidor, Grimshaw Architects & ARUP will discuss their UK based yet world-wide expertise in delivering Tall Building Solutions.

In order for architectural practices from around the UK to understand the importance of attending this event, Comar will also be holding a RIBA approved CPD on curtain walling.

If you wish to attend this event, please contact Alison Davey, Marketing Manager at Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems for a booking form on mailto:alisond@parksidegrp.co.uk or 020 8685 9685.

Discussion is welcomed throughout the day and architectural/contractor feedback on systems design and supply is of paramount importance. Design research will be undertaken throughout the day to really find out what the architectural market requires from the supply chain, this market research will be published and be available for attendees.

The aim of this event is to create real discussion on delivering the design concept of tall buildings through the supply chain. It is an unmissable event for specifiers, contractors and installers who want to keep abreast of current and future architectural trends.

Unitec's 'Swinging in the Rain' Golf Event

Renowned over the years for perfect weather on the day, this year's Unitec Charity Golf Challenge met its watershed, literally! Twenty teams took part in the industry event held this year at Hawkstone Park, Shropshire, which has recently been quoted as being the eighteenth best course in the world.

Following a dry and sunny shotgun start, conditions soon deteriorated into a soggy afternoon, which left buggies struggling for grip on the parkland course. Despite the less than perfect weather the valiant teams battled against the elements with typical good humour and surprisingly strong performances all round.

Prize winners were Whelband Windows Ltd with 84points, followed by Solar Windows Ltd, 80points and Glazerite Windows third with 80points. Steve Goble of Glassex had the best individual score; Phil Lee of Strand Hardware won the longest drive and Mike Carroll of Unitec was nearest the pin.

Over £5000 was raised during the evening dinner, with auction prizes generously provided by EMAP Glassex, Fenestra Journal, Glass & Glazing Products and Mr Fred Findley of Guardian Windows. Proceeds from the event went to the Down's Syndrome Children Holiday Charity.

Another Successful Shepley Masters

Customers gathered for a day packed full of activities and entertainment when Shepley played host at the 2005 Shepley Masters at the prestigious De Vere Belfry hotel in the Midlands on 22nd September.

Staged as the main event in Shepley's calendar year, the day saw 150 customers and staff competing alongside each other at golf and outdoor activities. The Masters brought the majority of Shepley's customers together as a big thank you for their much valued business, to meet the Shepley team, network with other installers and simply let their hair down during a day of competition, fun and entertainment.

The Shepley Masters teed off at the home of the Ryder Cup with a shotgun start golf competition on the renowned PGA national golf course. For non-golfers, delegates were put through their paces with a range of outdoor activities, including the traditional shooting and crossbows, and the more unusual hovercraft racing, falconry and human table football. However, the most talked about activity was the 'big challenge' which saw delegates racing through an inflatable assault course!

The after-dinner prize ceremony was hosted by Gary Torr (md) & Tim Walker (sales director) and congratulations goes to the winning teams of Darren Clark, Bob Plimmer, James Barnett & Stuart Ripton for golf and Brian Pearson, Wes Clarkson, Gary Spence, Ken Jackson and Shona Robinson for outdoor activities. The importance of winning was further highlighted when delegates sportingly accepted the infamous booby prize for last place.

Gary Torr commented, ‘We're delighted with the success of the Shepley Masters, this has become an annual event that both staff and customers look forward to. The compliments we have received from customers following the event are incredible. It's a credit to the personality of our customers and staff that the whole day remains as entertaining as ever and we're already looking into how to better the event next year’.

Throughout the day photo's of each 4-ball have been taken and all golfers will receive a copy of their photo on a spoof golf monthly cover as a memento of the day. The Shepley team was also busy taking photographs of the outdoor activities and evening entertainment and the pick of the best images can be seen in a slideshow on http://www.shepley.com

Hug a Beautiful Woman (Or Three) for Charity

In his fervent quest to drag the good, the bad and the ugly to join the 2005 Network Walk, which takes place in Manchester on Friday 21st October 2005 to raise money for the Hope House Children’s Hospice, organiser Mike Crewdson has managed to seduce (figuratively speaking) stunning beauties to join the event, thus significantly upping the looks average for the day.

The girls, who all represented their countries at the Miss Asia Pacific International event in China earlier this year, are 19 year old Megan Johnson from Southport - a Manchester model who represented Scotland; Laura Livesey, a 23 year old model from Colwyn Bay who represented Wales; and 19 year old dancer from Bolton, Allison Brennan, who represented England.

As one would expect, there is of course a sting in the tail: anyone wishing to have their photograph taken with the girls will be expected to make a small financial contribution for the pleasure of doing so, although the only restrictions on further use of such pictures will be governed only by the laws governing decency and copyright. A minimum of £5 for shots with individual girls is expected, and at least £20 for a group photograph. Oh, and bring your own camera…

‘We are delighted that these stunning and lovely girls have agreed to come along and join us on 21st October to join the fun,’ said an animated Mike Crewdson. ‘Not only will they add some glamour to the event, but they have agreed to be photographed with the Networkers to raise some extra cash for the children of Hope House. It’s going to be an excellent day!’

Teams and individuals from all corners of the industry will be taking what amounts to a gentle stroll around a planned section of Manchester, beginning from noon on Friday 21st October, with the intention of making new friends and contacts and renewing others, all in the cause of raising money for the Hope House Children’s Hospice, and of course, having a good time into the bargain.

Even such moderate exercise will, of course, require refreshment and sustenance and a number of hostelries have been selected along the route, to ensure participants do not run out of steam. As the walk itself draws to a close, events and gatherings are expected to take place well into the evening.

Says Mike: ‘We have planned the route to ensure there are lots of networking opportunities. And, of course, to raise extra money as we go. But we still have room for anyone else that wants to join us – we are only limited by the size of Manchester city centre after all. Raise as much money as you can and help us to make this the event of the year!’
