Syntek keeps Synseal customers up to date

Synseal’s research and development programme is acknowledged as innovative and pro-active. A stream of new products and new developments to existing products are being launched, and it can be hard for customers to keep up to date.

Synseal’s innovative answer is a new, dedicated website - www.syntek.co.uk. The three other Synseal sites are www.synseal.com (the main Synseal site which gives an overview of the company, products and news) www.synsealtimes.co.uk (carrying the latest newsletter and back issues). Both of these sites are aimed at senior management, prospects and the media. The fourth site, www.globalroof.co.uk is focused on the successful Global conservatory roof.

‘We don’t rest on our laurels when it comes to improving our products and service,' explains Nick Dutton, Sales and Marketing Director of Synseal. “We are always enhancing products, modifying the conservatory system bar lengths to improve optimisation for example, developing software facilities, introducing new manufacturing techniques and producing new marketing support materials. But we recognise that different people need different information, so we have tailored our sites to make it easier and quicker for them to find what they need. Factory managers, installation managers or specifiers need more detailed technical information and they need the latest updates. Now they can find it on www.syntek.co.uk. This means customers have the same information at the same time – as soon as it is available – and they can use it to plan ahead. Customers can access the site using a passkey which we provide. As far as we know this is an industry first.’

New Saracen Web Site Goes Live

The Saracen Secure scheme from Laird Security Hardware, is a provider of security hardware initiatives linking fabricators and installers of doors and windows to their customers. The new Saracen Secure web site, now live and extensively promoted to the public, is the centre plank for the support available to registered companies and is one of many marketing items available from Laird including literature and showroom display components.

‘The new web site is quick, informative and easy to use providing all a home owner might need to make an informed decision about security, a subject possibly of greatest concern.’ says the company. The Saracen Secure scheme and its high security benefits for replacement applications is described in understandable terms together with additional advantages such as a five-year security guarantee against forced entry plus reductions in home insurance costs. Importantly for the trade, it also lists those companies who are approved as Saracen Secure fabricators and installers with links to their web sites so additional leads and enquiries should be forthcoming for those organisations.

The Saracen Secure scheme and products is suitable for fabricators and installers who have password protected entry to the site for access to technical and other information. Products include a wide range of high security locks, handles and hinges for windows, entrance doors and French doors. All products meet the requirements of current British Standards for security, operation and durability with many licensed by the Police Secure by Design initiative. Approved installers are registered under the Saracen Secure scheme and provide a written guarantee of performance and security.

Net Gains through FrameQuote

‘Window companies not offering potential customers the option of an on-line estimating service risk losing valuable sales leads and incremental business.’ said Angela Coleman, Sales and Marketing Director of FrameQuote.co.uk.

With the market for domestic replacement windows, doors and conservatories currently valued at £3.9 billion * and an estimated 10.7 million households with internet access **, this ready route to market is currently under exploited.
FrameQuote.co.uk has been launched specifically to connect window companies directly to their customers, in the comfort of their own homes and in their own time.

‘What sets it apart from similar on-line providers is its guarantee of non syndicated exclusive leads.’ says Angela.

FrameQuote .co.uk offers a dedicated estimating tool designed for window, door and conservatory fabricators and installers. This service can be added to existing company websites; alternatively the company will provide a free of charge three page website in template form, or construct a bespoke website for a modest additional cost, for those companies without their own site.

Coleman said ‘FrameQuote.co.uk can support companies on many levels including enhancing advertising and promotion and curtailing unnecessary paperwork often generated through casual enquiries. We take care of all the technology and site maintenance, leaving companies more time to maximise every genuine sales opportunity.’

On-Line Ordering Increases Efficiencies for Total Glass Customers

Liverpool based fabricator Total Glass Ltd has introduced an on line ordering system to simplify the daily pricing and ordering procedures for its customers. The system will increase cost efficiencies for the customer and significantly reduce the risk of human error when placing orders.

Total Glass customers will have all the information they need at their fingertips, in terms of sizes, designs, and availability. Once their requirements have been entered into the system, confirmation from Total Glass is received within 24 hours, and the information is downloaded direct to the production line.

'The fewer people who are involved manually in the process, the fewer the opportunities for mistakes to be made during processing,' said Total Glass managing director Frank Deary. 'Overall this creates greater efficiencies all round. Our customers have better guarantees that they will receive their orders right, and right on time.'

The introduction of on-line ordering is part of an overall drive by Total Glass to minimise the worries and hassles of fitting windows for the company's customers. One of the biggest concerns and potential hold ups for an installer is not having the product ready to fit on the day it is needed. Introducing greater control over the ordering process will reduce these anxieties for the fitter.

Total Glass will install a stand alone PC and modem into its customers' sites as part of its commitment to them. The systems will be automatically updated every time Total Glass makes changes to its dataset.

TruSeal Technologies Adds Cost Estimator to Web Site

Window fabricators have a new tool to determine potential savings for their production processes. Estimated savings for using warm-edge flexible spacer technologies can now be determined online with a few clicks of a button at www.truseal.com.

The online Cost Estimator developed by TruSeal Technologies, Inc., a leading company in flexible spacer technology for insulating glass (IG), is a useful tool to help fabricators determine their existing system's applied cost and estimated potential savings by using TruSeal's flexible spacers over a multitude of other systems.

Upon visiting http://www.truseal.com/estimator (or selecting the 'Cost Estimator' link under the 'Tech Info' dropdown menu), users first select an IG spacer from a variety of single and dual seal options and then enter production-related items such as the approximate number of IG units produced per year, units produced per shift, market value of equipment and percent of IG units with muntins. Additional figures such as labour and component costs round out the required data needed to develop a comprehensive cost estimate.

Once the required information is collected, users click the 'Submit' button and can expect to receive a detailed cost summary within five business days.

WindowQuoter Earns Praise

One of the companies which was there when WindowQuoter was first launched has been singing its praises.

Aptly named Nu-Beginnings, based in Warrington, was there from the very start when WindowQuoter, the internet-based leads generating service, was launched two years ago.

Nu-Beginnings director Dave Chapman has told how he liked Price Engines Ltd - the company behind WindowQuoter - from the off because the firm did exactly what it promised.

Price Engines offered to set up a free website equipped with a WindowQuoter system - and that is just what Nu-Beginnings got.

Mr Chapman said: 'Often when people are selling you something they do not tell you the costs - and there always is one. We just pay for the inquiries that come off the website with Price Engines.

'Price Engines do a wonderful job. It's very cost effective - and the company's leads are genuine.'

Price Engines supplied the technical know-how and set up the website from start to finish, said Mr Chapman, who has been in the windows and doors industry for 20 years. Nu-Beginnings manufactures, supplies and installs windows, doors and conservatories. It manufactures the Eurocell system.

Mr Chapman had complete control over what appeared on the internet - right down to writing the text that went on the website.

Companies using WindowQuoter can select any area they wish to cover and the number of appointments they require each day. All appointments are with buyers purchasing windows, doors and conservatories in the near future, with an average order value of £4,000-plus each.

Aprimatic's New Website Goes Live

Aprimatic's new website goes live this month offering visitors a clear and easy to navigate site.

Aprimatic's Managing Director, Phil Bushnell is delighted with the finished site, 'We did a lot of research prior to redesigning our website. We found a lot of installers liked the idea of using the internet but their experiences online could be frustrating and counterproductive. Often they got bogged down with working through a labyrinth of pages before finding what they wanted. With this in mind we have developed a site where visitors should be able to find the information they want in a matter of clicks.

'The site has been designed to ensure that specifiers and installers can find inforniation
quickly and easily without wasting valuable time. The secret to this is the handy application chart for each product category. This conveys product parameters in one easy to read page, allowing visitors to identify exactly the product that meets their requirements. Visitors can select those products and visit individual product pages, which outline key benefits and technical specifications along with a visual image. From this page they can click to open a downloadable PDF which relates detailed installation instructions and technical specifications.

The site also includes general information and news about the company, as well as providing contact details for anyone wishing to speak to technical support staff. As Phil explained: 'We believe very strongly that our website is an additional customer service and runs in tandem with our technical team. We found in our research that people found it irritating that many websites act as a barrier to personal contact and the feedback we got confirmed that our industry still likes the personal element.'

BPF-Online Re-Launched

A new re-design looks set to further improve the impact and performance of BPF-Online as a source of support and sales leads for UK plastics businesses.

Since the introduction of the website in 2001, the number of users has grown exponentially – close to 50,000 visits in October generated over 1 million hits for the site. The latest re-design has allowed the BPF to make fundamental changes to the structure which should rapidly impact on the rate of growth.

On visiting the site, the user experiences the visually enhanced front page, with colourful images and enhanced usability functions such as a search box and ‘slide out’ hover menus with simple categorisation for easy navigation.

Described by Association Journal as ‘the ultimate in website performance’, BPF-Online also features the highly popular product-sourcing Directory - a free to register directory to help potential customers identify UK based suppliers from over 8,000 categories. Most of the 50,000 visits per month are driven through the Directory being converted into sales leads for those listed.

Other areas of particular interest include the ‘How to Process Plastics’ and the ‘Plastics Materials’ sections, many of which are sponsored by top brands within the industry. This area of the site acts as an extremely effective educational tool for the plastics industry using animations to demonstrate processes such as injection moulding, rotational moulding, vacuum forming and extrusion blow moulding.

The site also includes a new bookshop which is both simple and secure for purchasing online and BPF members still receive a 20% discount on all publications.

Completing its first year, the Business Support Network (BSN) continues to offer specially tailored services to the plastics industry and the BPF works constantly with the BSN members to develop this service.

'We are continually seeking to improve the impact and usability of the site – the positive comments we have received from those within in the industry and key end-user contacts makes us confident that we are achieving this.' commented the BPF’s Iain McIlwee, 'BPF-Online is establishing itself as the home page for the UK plastics industry.'

Sky-Vent Online

Sky-Vent customers can now order conservatory roof vents online and paper free. Instead of spending even more time at the fax machine, orders can simply be placed by filling in the online order form on the website.

Pre-glazed vents are ordered by selecting the make and shade of polycarbonate on a pull down menu. An automatic order acknowledgement is then faxed direct to the customer to confirm the specification and delivery date.

The company says ‘the new system not only saves customers time but eliminates any order process errors as the site is linked direct to the C.N.C. production line.'

GlassOnWeb.com Celebrates Two Years of Existence

In October GlassOnWeb.com, the on-line portal dedicated to the glass industry, will celebrate two years of existence. The website was first officially presented during the Vitrum 2001 show in Milan. 'The inspiration for this website was born from a need to fill internet information gaps in the glass industry and to bring together all the players, from glass manufacturers, machinery and equipment producers, glaziers and frame makers, to architects and other trade professionals.' explains GlassOnWeb.com's coordinator Robert Miklus.

'After months of final developments and designing we selected Vitrum 2001 as our date to launch the website. Since its inception we have combined the latest internet technologies and trends with our knowledge of the glass industry to develop this site.'

During this period of time GlassOnWeb.com has produced about 70 weekly issues of newsletters, gathered more than 1700 news stories, examined 120 article topics accompanied by their relative web links, and listed 1200 suppliers.

Due to these results, GlassOnWeb.com today claims over 60,000 visitors per month, having generated more than 435,000 page views. The number of visitors that access GlassOnWeb.com is still increasing, which demonstrates that the website is heading in the right direction.

The GlassOnWeb.com team’s goals for the future are to continue its march towards becoming the references point for operators in the glass sector and to further improve the website with new services and content.

New Design Tool from Solutia

Solutia has developed a design tool at its website. Visitors to the site can experiment with Vanceva design in the online interactive studio, where they will be able to produce their own coloured and patterned laminated glass designs. From here, architects and designers can order samples online, learn more about Vanceva Design and obtain contact details for Saint-Gobain Solaglas for technical design advice and availability information.

Waste Not...Check Out Dekura's New Website

PVCu fabricators and installers can now access specialist advice and information on recycling through Dekura's new website. The site details how everyone can work in partnership to meet the challenges presented by environmental legislation such as landfill tax and European-wide voluntary commitment targets for PVC, known as Vinyl 2010.

The website explains how PVCu is recycled, what the re-processed material can be used for, and crucially, how fabricators can contribute to its effectiveness by separating white and coloured PVCu before collection.

It contains downloadable advice sheets and the opportunity to register for regular updates on environmental legislation.

Under Vinyl 2010, the UK's self-appointed PVCu recycling targets are set at 25% of post consumer window waste by the end of this year and 50% by the end of 2005. The latter total is anticipated to equate to approximately 1,840 tonnes of material to be recycled.

While this commitment may currently only be voluntary, the BPF is currently formulating a policy for dealing with end-of-life PVCu windows and other waste profiles in the UK in the knowledge that legislation will follow if the industry fails to regulate itself.

Dekura recognises there is still much to be done in promoting the tangible benefits and merits of recycling to the benefit of businesses, and not least, to the environment.

Dekura is working with Norwegian owned Hydro Polymers, who are pursuing a long term development strategy for the PVC industry based on The Natural Step, a scientifically based methodology for sustainable development.

Says Tony Moore, General Manager of Dekura: 'We can help fabricators to comply with the law at little or no cost to their business through a service that requires minimum inconvenience to their operation.'

easy-fab Extends Capabilities to Include Transmission of Image Files

The world of information technology and the benefits it can bring to the smooth running of all businesses continues to grow at a rapid pace and the advantages that the easy-fab system confers now provides for the transmission of detailed Image files as well as all the practical detail, accuracy and security elements that your procurement department requires.

Essentially easy-fab was designed to automate the ordering process for materials from suppliers by tapping in directly to the fabricator's own manufacturing software. The benefits were immediately appreciated, both in terms of significant improvements in the accuracy of orders and the time saved in manpower in processing these orders. It was a logical progression to adapt the software to deliver the same tangible results for all procurement operations - no matter the complexity of the business.

'In fact', claims John Chambers, National Sales Manager for easy-fab, 'the more complex the purchasing operation you have to arrive at to fashion the end product that you sell, the greater the benefits that easy-fab will deliver'.

'But, there were also additions that it readily lent itself to which were sought after by specialist sectors in the trade. Our recent enhancement to the link with First Degree's Window Designer product allows for the transmission of Image files detailing lead and Georgian designs via easy-fab. This information is required by DGU manufacturers to satisfy customers' survey details - further automating the ordering process.

'The easy-fab community continues to grow, predominantly within the UK and Ireland, but it is currently dealing with enquiries from as far away as Africa and the Middle East as well as the USA.

'This is because easy-fab is wholly internet-based and, as such, does not suffer from the constraints of location and time zones. It allows access twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week no matter where you might be.

'An internal PC-based programme is only accessible from that PC - and that can cause major logistical problems for companies that operate from multiple sites whether they are situated in close proximity or scattered throughout the country or beyond'.

The Magic Price Machine - Taking the Risk out of Changing Prices

'Changing your prices can have unintended consequences. If all goes well, a price cut brings in enough extra volume to give you the contribution to profit you expected. But how much extra do you need? If you put up prices and lose volume will you still make more money?' says Michael Rigby Associates.

'Use the Magic Price Machine, free of charge from Michael Rigby Associates, to tell you what the effects will be before you decide to cut or raise prices. All this simple engine requires is your sales commission, gross profit margin and percentage increase or decrease in price.

'The engine will then tell you how much additional sales volume you need to produce or how much your sales can fall to produce the same margin and breakeven as before.'

Visit http://www.magicmachine.521621.com and see the effect your changes will have. Don't just take our word for it:

'MRA invited me to try out their new Magic Price Machine, so I tried a few calculations and found it is a very good way at trying out different prices and discounts and seeing what the projected margins will be. In this industry where people tend to drop their prices just to undercut, and don't realise the repercussions in the future, they often find that they've made no money on the job or even made a loss. It'll be a great help.'
Mr Roger Woodward, Co Director
Apex Windows

'I tried out MRA's new Magic Price Machine and found it very interesting. I will be inclined to make use of this price machine to help me with decision-making on new ventures.

'I have been in the industry for 20 years. At Kolorplas we have a very strict retail price structure, but I can see companies who use money off incentives at quiet times, or think of putting prices up, benefiting greatly from this. If they drop their prices by 10% and work on annual accounts, it may be 18 months before they see what effect this has on their company. By then it could be too late. Now they will be able to calculate what they need to produce in order to make a profit if they drop their price. They can then decide if that is the right thing to do.'
Mr Chas Hollis, Sales Director
Kolorplas (UK) Group, Oxon

'I looked at MRA's new Magic Price Machine and, although we know our margins, it was nice to see it in print and calculated for me. This is a quick way of either checking to see if the maths works out, or to start from scratch to find out what you need to sell in order to maintain your margins.'
